19 Ways to Conserve Water This Summer

Water conservation has gone from being a choice to a necessity. Not only does it save you money, but it also helps save water for our planet. You might not realize how easily water can get wasted, and you probably imagine that conserving water takes a huge effort – think again! Here are 19 simple ways to start cutting back on water this summer.

  1. Check faucets and pipes for leaks (this can save you up to 20 gallons per day)
  2. Check your toilets for leaks (replace parts if needed)
  3. Don’t use the toilet as a wastebasket (five to seven gallons of water are wasted)
  4. Install water-saving showerheads and low flow faucet aerators
  5. Take shorter showers (a 4 minute shower uses about 20 to 40 gallons of water)
  6. Insulate your pipes (you’ll get hot water faster)
  7. Use the dishwasher and washing machine for full loads only
  8. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth (use it only to wet the brush)
  9. Don’t let the faucet run while cleaning fruit and vegetables
  10. Keep cool bottles for drinking in the fridge (it saves you water on tap)
  11. Aim your sprinklers properly (away from paved areas)
  12. Deep soak your lawn so that moisture can soak down to the roots
  13. Water earlier in the day (to prevent evaporation)
  14. Don’t run the hose while washing your car (use a pail of soapy water instead)
  15. If hand washing dishes, fill the sink rather than letting the water run
  16. Water your lawn only when it’s needed (letting the grass grow taller will promote water retention in the soil)
  17. Check for leaks in pipes and hoses
  18. Use a broom to clean your deck instead of a hose
  19. Use your water meter to check for hidden water leaks (if the meter does not read exactly the same after a two-hour period when water is being used, there is most likely a leak.
