During the year in Longwood, FL, your HVAC system’s effectiveness depends on its ability to circulate air. Here are four common causes of poor airflow and how to resolve them.
1. Clogged or Wrong Air Filters
Your air filter is the first place to look for airflow problems. Check it regularly to make sure it’s still clean and passing air efficiently. Make sure to replace it about every 90 days.
In addition, check your system for the air filter it’s designed to use. Using an air filter with a very high MERV rating may cause inadequate airflow through your system. Not only does this reduce efficiency, but it also increases operational strain, leading to more AC and heating repairs.
2. Blocked Registers
Your registers create a pressure differential that causes air to circulate around your home. Air from the output vents creates positive pressure while air into the return vents creates negative pressure. This difference causes the air throughout your home to move so that your system can continue heating or cooling effectively.
With closed or blocked registers, your system can’t create this pressure difference. Make sure each vent is open and has at least a 2-inch clearance above and around each one.
3. Old or Damaged Ductwork
Your ductwork may eventually wear out after a service life of 15 years. As they age, ducts will develop leaks, allowing air to seep out and thus reducing efficiency. If you haven’t done so already, have your ducts professionally tested and sealed.
4. Dirty System
Your system slowly collects dust and other contaminants, which build up on the heat exchanger, evaporator coil and circulating fan. A technician will clean these areas as part of routine maintenance.
