What is the best size for me?

It’s important to choose the appropriate size and output for your living area. Whilst the largest heating capacity may seem appealing, the air can easily become stifling if the heater is too large for your space and your room gets too hot too quickly. This also wastes fuel and your stove’s window will typically turn black. On the other hand, if you get the right sized heater for your space, the window of your stove should never turn black and will sustain the fire for 8-10 hours.
Wood heaters come with a low, medium or large heating capacity. This is reflected in the size of the firebox area. If you need to heat just one large room or a small holiday home that you visit only a few times per year, a small wood stove will do. If you plan to heat an entire floor, choose a medium sized wood stove. To heat a moderate to large home or open living area in a cold climate, consider a large wood stove. The majority of wood heater manufacturers provide an indication of square feet or metres the unit will heat.

What is the best type for me?

Freestanding convection wood heaters provide fairly even heat throughout a room and are less likely than radiant heaters to cause burns from direct contact, however, a fireguard is still recommended.

Fan forced wood heaters are usually a convection heater with a 2 or 3 speed blower. They are ideal for larger homes where air movement is a priority.

Freestanding radiant wood heaters emit two thirds radiant heat and one third convection. They have very hot surface temperatures and heat your room by sending out heat in all directions.

Inbuilt wood heaters are built into a heat sensitive structure within a building.

Insert wood heaters are specifically designed to be installed within a masonry fireplace. They are suitable for converting open brick fireplaces and are almost as efficient as freestanding units.

Pellet wood heaters burn compressed wood or biomass pellets to create a source of heat for residential and sometimes industrial spaces. They create a constant flame and require little to no physical adjustments.
