5 Pet Safety Tips For Hot Weather

Since National Cat Day was August 8th and National Dog Day is August 26th, it’s the perfect time to brush up on pet safety during the summer months. The heat can be particularly tough on pets, so here are some safety tips to ensure they stay comfortable and healthy.

Keep Your Home Cool

One of the most important things you can do is maintain a cool environment at home. If you must leave your pets alone, ensure the air conditioning is running. A comfortable temperature for pets is typically around or below 78 degrees. This keeps them cool and reduces the risk of heat-related health issues. Pets can be susceptible to heat, so ensuring your home stays within a safe temperature range is critical.

Never Leave Your Pet in a Hot Vehicle

It’s tempting to bring your pet along for errands, but leaving them in a hot vehicle, even for a few minutes, can be dangerous. Temperatures inside a car can rise rapidly, leading to heatstroke or worse. It’s best to keep your pets at home in the comfort of air conditioning rather than risking their safety in a hot car. Even with the windows slightly open, the temperature can become unbearable quickly.

Use Cooling Products

Consider investing in pet cooling products like cooling mats, vests, or bandanas. These products help regulate your pet’s body temperature, making them a great option for dogs and cats unsuited to hot weather. Cooling mats can provide a refreshing spot for pets to lie on, and cooling vests or bandanas can be worn during walks or outdoor activities to help prevent overheating.

Walk Your Pet in the Grass

Asphalt and other paved surfaces can become scorching hot in the sun, sometimes reaching temperatures as high as 145 degrees. Just as walking barefoot on these surfaces would be painful, it can harm your pet’s paws. Whenever possible, walk your pets on grassy areas instead of pavement. Additionally, try to schedule walks for the early morning or late evening when the temperatures are cooler. This not only protects their paws but also helps avoid the risk of overheating.

Watch Pets Around Pools

While many dogs and cats enjoy water, not all are natural swimmers. If you have a pool, always supervise your pets when they’re nearby. Some pets may accidentally fall in, and if they aren’t good swimmers, they could be at risk of drowning.
