DAVIDSON, N.C. — Trane has redesigned its Precedent Rooftop Unit portfolio and updated its unitary, split system, and variable air volume (VAV) products. Two new indoor unit styles have also been added to the Trane Mitsubishi Electric HVRF (hybrid variable refrigerant flow) product line.
“Decarbonization is easier when HVAC equipment is easy to install, easy to use, and easy to operate with low global warming potential refrigerants,” said Oakley Roberts, vice president of product management at Trane, in a press release. “Trane is making it easier for building owners, engineers, and contractors to help make headway in all these areas with additions to the market-first all-electric HVRF, more rooftops, and split systems that are equipped with low-GWP refrigerants, and the completion of the next-generation Precedent line.”
New Indoor Units
Trane has added two families of indoor unit options to the Trane/Mitsubishi Electric HVRF system, the only all-electric hybrid VRF on the market. The HVRF uses refrigerant to connect outdoor units to the Hybrid Branch Controller (HBC) and water to connect the HBC to indoor units. This two-pipe system combines the advantages of VRF and hydronic chillers into an all-electric heat pump that can provide heating and cooling simultaneously, Trane’s press release said.
Ceiling cassettes and wall-mounted options have been added to the existing ceiling-concealed indoor units, increasing flexibility and accommodating various space designs and esthetics. The system delivers zoned comfort, helping owners of multi-zone commercial buildings that require individual temperature settings achieve sustainability goals through electrification while complying with refrigerant requirements, the press release said.
The new Trane/Mitsubishi Electric HVRF indoor units, which have hydronic coils, also feature:
• Four-way ceiling-cassettes, measuring 22 by 22 inches, that range in capacities from 4,000 Btuh to 15,000 Btuh.
• Four-way ceiling-cassettes, measuring 33 by 33 inches, in four capacities between 6,000 Btuh and 48,000 Btuh.
• Wall-mounted units ranging from 4,000 Btuh to 30,000 Btuh.
Updated RTUs
Trane’s updated Precedent light commercial rooftop units come in a range of capacities from 3 tons to 25 tons; the RTUs’ efficiency ratings include standard, high, and ultra-high eFlex, and their heating types include gas/electric, electric/electric, heat pump, and hybrid dual fuel. All units ship with low-GWP R-454B refrigerant to help small offices, restaurants, schools, warehouses, and government buildings operate more sustainably, the press release said. Features and available options are uniform across the entire portfolio.
All Precedent units now offer:
• Enhanced performance, connectivity, and serviceability via the Symbio 700 unit controller, featuring an onboard interface and app for startup and servicing.
• Reduced carbon emissions with all-electric heat pump and dual-fuel options.
• Dehumidification and temperature stability with optional modulating hot gas reheat.
• Quicker and easier installation with a packaged unit that houses components in one cabinet as well as a new modular component design that simplifies service.
RTUs Move to R-454B
Trane Foundation Rooftop Units are transitioning to R-454B refrigerant. In addition, larger Foundation RTUS, with capacities between 15 tons and 25 tons, will ship with Symbio 700 unit controls to improve performance and ease installation, Trane’s press release said.
Foundation RTUs with capacities of between 7.5 tons and 12.5 tons will be available with R-454B in early 2025.
IntelliCore Large Split Systems
Trane has updated its RAUJ models, now branded IntelliCore Large Split Systems, to help building owners reduce operational costs and meet sustainability goals. IntelliCore Large Split Systems can be used in many applications when a rooftop unit is not feasible, the company said.
These air-cooled large condensing units now offer:
• Factory-installed Symbio 800 controllers for enhanced system monitoring, performance, and building connectivity.
• Low-GWP R-454B refrigerant that meets environmental regulations.
• Factory-installed options that include a unit disconnect switch, a powered or non-powered convenience outlet, and high short-circuit current rating.
New Features for Odyssey Systems
Trane’s Odyssey split systems include new features that provide convenience and flexibility to help support decarbonization. The systems have transitioned to R-454B refrigerant and include factory-installed leak-detection.
Odyssey Split Systems now come standard with Symbio thermostat control with simplified wiring for easier and faster installations. Building stakeholders seeking to benefit from a building automation system (BAS) may choose to pair optional communication capabilities with the Symbio 700 controller, the press release said.
VariTrane Improvements
Trane has improved the VariTrane VAV (variable air volume) Series fan-powered terminal units to provide superior acoustics. Equipped with an improved suppressor-integral attenuator, the units help reduce noise in occupied spaces at full- and part-load conditions. This upgrade makes the units ideal for applications where acoustics are essential, including commercial real estate buildings, healthcare facilities, and schools, the company said.
These terminal units match heating, ventilation, and air conditioning supply to localized demand to provide passive humidity management, improve IAQ, and deliver energy efficiency. Pre-programmed, yet customizable, control sequences work in conjunction with Trane building automation systems to enhance VAV performance.
