Know What You’re Hearing, Smelling or Seeing
Nobody wants to hear funny noises coming from their HVAC system or have strange smells wafting out of the vents. But like any complex system, your heating and cooling equipment does require regular upkeep, and sometimes even repair or replacement. Unfortunately too, ignoring the warning signs of HVAC issues can lead to higher than normal energy bills, less than optimal indoor comfort or even a complete system breakdown. Don’t let it happen. Knowing when your system needs attention can save you from expensive system fixes and suboptimal indoor comfort (to put it mildly). Here are some “heads up” signals that it is time to call your HVAC professionals.
Weird Noises
Your HVAC is normally a quiet system, operating with only a modicum of gentle sounds as air circulates. If you start hearing banging, clanking, or squealing, it’s a likely sign that something is wrong. These sounds may indicate a loose or broken component or even that your compressor needs attention. But don’t panic. While some noises may suggest major problems, some whaps or whistles just translate into minor repairs.
Uneven Heating or Cooling
If you notice that some rooms are much warmer or cooler than others, your HVAC system may be struggling to maintain consistent temperatures throughout your home. These uneven temps may be caused by blocked vents, leaking ducts, or a failing compressor. All of these issues require attention to prevent further problems from developing.
Higher Energy Bills
A sudden spike in your energy bills without a significant change in usage is a pretty reliable indicator that “Houston, we have a problem.” How old is your equipment? An older system will have to work harder and use more energy to heat or cool your home. If your heating and cooling system is over 10-15 years old, it may be reaching the end of its useful life. Furthermore, if you find yourself calling a technician regularly for repairs, it may be more cost-effective to replace the system altogether.
Weak Airflow
Weak airflow from your vents is another sign that your HVAC needs an inspection and possibly a repair. Blocked filters, blocked ducts, or a failing blower motor could all be the culprit.
Excessive Humidity or Dusty Air
Your HVAC system is designed to regulate humidity levels, as well as to filter dust and other particles from the air. If you notice an increase in humidity, mold, or dust in your home, your system may not be working properly. Limited humidity control can lead to uncomfortable indoor conditions and even significant health complications for your family. A clogged filter and other equipment problems may lead to higher than normal levels of dust and allergens, too. Don’t wait to repair these issues. Get them checked out.
If your system is acting up, it’s time to call in an HVAC professional. Heating and cooling equipment is meant to last a relatively long time, providing indoor comfort for your family at a reasonable cost. If it’s not doing that, you deserve better. Get in touch today.
