New Course Details Working With Low-GWP Refrigerants

WALLER, Texas — Daikin Comfort Technologies North America Inc. has teamed up with the Esco Institute to offer a new online course, “Low-GWP Refrigerant Safety: Flammable and Mildly Flammable (A2L) Refrigerants.”

The course is aimed at educating those in the HVACR industry on low-GWP refrigerants and the advanced equipment designed to utilize them, a press release from Daikin said.

Traditional refrigerants and the equipment that operates with them are being phased out in favor of low-GWP alternatives. Many of the new refrigerants are classified by ASHRAE as A2L — meaning they have low toxicity, low flammability, and low global warming potential. The Daikin-Esco Institute course is intended to introduce these new refrigerants to those who will be working with them.

Key topics covered in the course include refrigerant safety, properties of the new refrigerants, working with refrigerant blends, proper equipment installation and servicing, safety measures and protocols for working with flammable refrigerants, and the codes and standards associated with the new refrigerants, Daikin’s press release said.

The course is available through the HVAC Learning Campus. To enroll:

• Go to HVAC Learning Campus.

• Click “Sign In” in the upper right corner.

• Click “Create Account,” or enter username and password if you already have an account.

• From the drop-down menu next to your name in the upper right corner, select “My Trainings.”

• Search for “ESCO Institute Low GWP (A2L) Refrigerants.”

Daikin also recommends that HVACR professionals contact their local Daikin distributors to learn more about the in-person and online training available.

According to Daikin’s press release, the cylinders for A2L refrigerants will feature a spring-loaded pressure relief valve instead of a rupture disc, and will have a red marking for easy identification. Most A2L equipment will require refrigerant detection systems (RDS), the press release said, and new National Fire Prevention Association fire safety storage requirements apply to low-GWP refrigerants.

There are over 280 million low-GWP systems already installed in more than 60 countries, Daikin’s press release said.
