4 Furnace Maintenance Tips
Texans know how quickly the temps can change here – from sweltering to downright freezing. And when that happens, the last thing you want is to have your furnace go on the fritz in the middle of the night. At Advent Air, we’re here when you need us – to maintain your furnace, repair it, or even replace it – and to ensure that your budget, energy bill, and comfort always come first.
But we don’t want you to ever have to wake up to a freezing house (and freezing pipes) – so here are our top four furnace maintenance tips so you can stay warm and cozy all winter long.
1. Don’t Wait for Winter Weather to Check Your Furnace
Furnaces always seem to conk out on the coldest night of the year. That’s why you should have your furnace checked by a professional every year while the temps are still mild, so you have plenty of time if you discover that your furnace is in need of repairs or replacement.
2. Replace Your Air Filter
Your air filter does the important job of trapping particulates in your home, such as dust, pollen, mold spores, and more. When air filters are not changed regularly, they can become clogged with those particles, making your furnace work harder to push the air through. This is not only inefficient, but it can ultimately wear out your furnace faster, increase your energy bills, and reduce your air quality. Check out our online store to order your air filters and have them auto-delivered so you never forget!
3. Clean Out Vents and Ductwork
At the start of the winter season, take a walk around your house and check that all heating vents are open (unless you are closing them off for specific rooms) and that nothing is blocking them. You may also want to remove the vents to vacuum out any debris that may impede airflow. Also consider having someone inspect and clean your ductwork, especially if it hasn’t been cleaned in a while.
4. Keep Your Family Safe
Check around your furnace before you start it for the first time to make sure that there is nothing flammable nearby – items like clothes, paint, storage boxes, aerosol cans, gasoline or other household items should never be kept near the furnace. Additionally, if you have a gas furnace, be sure that the outdoor exhaust flue is clear – otherwise dangerous and potentially deadly gasses such as carbon monoxide can back up into the house.
