Your HVAC system’s air filter helps keep dust, dirt, pollen, allergens, and other contaminants from invading your indoor air. Maintaining your home’s indoor air quality will improve your health and help you avoid allergies and respiratory issues. Choosing the right air filter for your HVAC system has a huge impact on your indoor air quality and the lifespan, efficiency, and performance of your HVAC system. At B & J Refrigeration, we can help you choose the right HVAC filter for your home. Take a look at the different types of air filters, and call us if you have any questions.
Air Filter MERV Ratings
Every air filter has a MERV rating. The MERV, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, is a scale that tells you how efficient an air filter is at trapping harmful particles. The MERV scale ranges from 1-20, and the higher the number, the better the filtration. A low MERV filter ranges from 1-4 and traps big particles. A medium MERV filter ranges from 5-8 and catches some smaller particles. A high MERV filter ranges from 9-16 and traps tiny particles. A HEPA filter ranges from 17-20 and traps particles as small as .03 microns. It’s important to choose a MERV rating that improves your home’s indoor air quality and the efficiency of your HVAC system.
Fiberglass Air Filters
Fiberglass filters are the least expensive type of air filter available. They are disposable and are good at keeping large particles out of your HVAC system and indoor air. They typically have a MERV rating of 4 or lower.
Pleated Air Filters
Pleated air filters are made from folds of cotton or polyester. They are more efficient at trapping smaller particles and the more pleats they have, the better their filtering abilities. They typically have a MERV rating of 5-8.
HEPA Air Filters
HEPA air filters are the highest quality air filter you can buy. They are best for households with pets and children or in areas with a lot of dust and pollen or poor outdoor air quality. HEPA filters screen up to 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, pet dander, viruses, bacteria, and other irritants and contaminants. They typically have a MERV rating of 11 or higher.
UV Air Filters
UV air filters are air filters that are used in air purifiers or air cleaners. They can be installed in your HVAC system ductwork, and they can kill viruses, bacteria, and microorganisms. They aren’t as efficient at removing dust or particulates, so you should use them in conjunction with another type of air filter if you have allergies.
