How New Refrigerant Changes Affect You

As concerns about the global warming potential (GWP) of today’s HVAC refrigerants increase, the industry is introducing a new generation of alternative formulas. Here’s what residents in the greater Orlando area need to know about the phase-out of the widely used refrigerant R-410A.

What Is R-410A?

Refrigerant — it’s the magic elixir that allows HVAC systems to extract heat from the air in one area and move it to another. Whether using an AC system to cool your home or a heat pump to warm and cool it, you rely on an HVAC refrigerant such as R-410A to keep your indoor environment comfortable.

R-410A was considered a breakthrough when first introduced in the early 2000s. Friendlier to the environment than refrigerants with hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) formulas, it works well without damaging the ozone layer. Scientists have found, however, that like earlier refrigerants, R-410A contributes to global warming. Government mandates dictate that after January 1, 2026, all new HVAC systems must use a lower GWP refrigerant.

How the Changes Impact You

You won’t be required to replace HVAC systems that use formulas such as R-104A. Still, it may cost more to maintain and repair them as parts and the refrigerant itself becomes harder and more expensive to obtain. Recycled, reclaimed and recovered refrigerants can still be used to service existing systems, but costs are likely to increase as supplies of R-104A decrease. If you have an older system, it may be time to consider installing a replacement system.

Here’s the Good News!

The phase-out of higher GWP refrigerants has its plus side. Homeowners in the Orlando area who choose to replace their existing units can enjoy the energy-saving benefits of an HVAC system that costs significantly less to operate.
