CoolSys, a provider of sustainable refrigeration, HVAC, energy, and engineering solutions, announced a specialized service to assist retailers in removing and responsibly recycling Redbox kiosks following the closure of the DVD rental company. After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June 2024, Redbox transitioned to Chapter 7 liquidation in July 2024, leaving thousands of kiosks nationwide needing removal and disposal.
Once a mainstay at retail locations, Redbox kiosks contain refrigeration systems designed to protect DVDs from extreme temperatures. Their removal poses unique challenges, including safely handling refrigerants and recycling components such as electronics, metal, and plastic. CoolSys has stepped in to address this need, providing retailers an efficient, eco-friendly solution.
“The closure of Redbox has created a significant logistical challenge for retailers who need to remove and recycle these kiosks,” said Rich Wyckoff, chief executive officer and president of CoolSys. “We’re leveraging our expertise in refrigeration and sustainability to ensure that these units are not only removed but also responsibly recycled. We aim to help retailers easily remove these defunct units while protecting the environment.”
CoolSys’ meticulous process for unit removal includes securely disconnecting the units and capping any exposed wiring, carefully removing the units, and grinding down anchor bolts in the concrete to create a smooth surface. The units are then recycled responsibly to maximize raw material recovery, while ensuring the complete destruction of any customer information potentially stored in the kiosks. Additionally, for outdoor kiosks, refrigerants are disposed of in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
Since launching this service, CoolSys has successfully removed and recycled over 4,700 Redbox kiosks nationwide.
