In an interview, Stan Kolbe, executive director of government and political affairs at SMACNA discussed the economic effects of the U.S. Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum, set to resume on March 12. He highlighted concerns raised by the Coalition of American Metal Manufacturers and Users (CAMMU), warning that the 25 percent tariffs could raise material prices and extend lead times, harming U.S. manufacturers. While the government initially projected revenue from these tariffs, they have instead led to higher costs and disrupted production, particularly for materials from Canada and Mexico. The timing is problematic, as the tariffs take effect just before expected tax relief measures, causing immediate price hikes for contractors while tax benefits remain delayed. Kolbe noted growing concerns among lawmakers and the significant international fallout, especially with Canada and Mexico. He warned that these tariffs could ultimately harm U.S. manufacturing and push businesses to relocate abroad, undermining the goal of boosting domestic production.
