If you’re planning to repair or replace your air conditioning system in the near future, 2025 will bring some important changes that could affect your decision. As part of ongoing efforts to reduce environmental impact and improve energy efficiency, the HVAC industry is transitioning to new refrigerants—specifically R-32 and R-454B—that are better for the planet and designed to work with the next generation of air conditioning systems.
At Purl’s Sheet Metal & Air Conditioning, we’re committed to helping homeowners throughout Fresno and the Central Valley stay informed and prepared. Here’s what you need to know about these upcoming refrigerant changes—and how you can take advantage of current savings with Carrier Cool Cash when upgrading your system.
Why the Change in Refrigerants?
For years, systems have relied on R-410A, a refrigerant known for its effective cooling performance. However, R-410A has a high global warming potential (GWP), which means it contributes significantly to climate change when released into the atmosphere.
To align with new federal environmental regulations and the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act, manufacturers are phasing out R-410A in favor of more environmentally friendly refrigerants starting in 2025. These new alternatives—R-32 and R-454B—have much lower GWPs and offer a range of benefits to homeowners and the environment.
Benefits of R-32 and R-454B
Both R-32 and R-454B are hydrofluoroolefin (HFO)-based refrigerants designed to replace R-410A. Here’s why they matter:
Better for the Environment
Lower Global Warming Potential: R-32 has a GWP of 675 and R-454B is even lower at 466—compared to R-410A’s 2,088.
Reduced Carbon Footprint: Using these refrigerants helps minimize your system’s environmental impact and supports broader climate goals.
Improved Energy Efficiency
R-32 and R-454B systems are designed for higher energy efficiency, translating to lower monthly energy bills and a smaller carbon footprint.
These refrigerants also transfer heat more efficiently, which means faster and more effective cooling for your home.
Compatible With Newer, Smarter Systems
Most new AC systems launching in 2025 and beyond will be optimized for these refrigerants. That means better integration with smart thermostats, variable speed compressors, and other high-tech features.
What This Means for Older Systems
If your current AC unit uses R-410A, it won’t become obsolete overnight—but there are a few things to consider:
Potentially Higher Repair Costs
As R-410A is phased out, the cost of recharging or repairing older systems may rise significantly due to reduced supply and increased regulation. If your AC requires frequent service, you could end up paying a premium just to keep it running.
Limited Compatibility
R-32 and R-454B are not backward-compatible with R-410A systems. That means retrofitting an old system to use new refrigerants is not possible, and full system replacement will be required when the time comes.
Should You Replace Now or Wait?
If your current system is more than 10 years old, struggling to keep up, or costing you in repeated repairs, now may be the perfect time to upgrade. New systems that use R-32 or R-454B will be more efficient and better aligned with future standards.
