ACCA Launches New AI App



The middle of a service call isn’t exactly an ideal time to flip through a physical manual or attempt to scroll through a PDF on a phone, but for technicians wrestling with a load question or trying to find a detail on duct layout, that’s been the reality. Until now.  

Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) has launched its new app, Ask ACCA, that will leverage the power of AI to shorten the amount of time it takes a technician to find technical answers. The app will allow users to ask questions in plain language, and the tool will pull responses directly from ACCA’s library, including Manual J, Manual D, Manual S, and other industry standards. 

“Contractors don’t have time to dig through a manual in the middle of a job,” said Barton James, president and CEO of ACCA. “Ask ACCA is our answer. It gives contractors the answers they need — fast, accurate, and straight from the source.”

According to the association, Ask ACCA is currently focused on delivering guidance and interpretation rather than replacing engineering work. The tool is designed to give quick, targeted explanations based on the manuals technicians already use for compliant design and installation. 

“Right now, Ask ACCA is designed to help contractors get quick guidance based on our technical manuals and standards,” said Christine Gibson, ACCA’s vice president of education, product development, and digital strategy. “Whether someone needs help understanding Manual J load calculations or navigating Manual D for duct design, Ask ACCA offers immediate, easy-to-understand answers.” 

Instead of hunting for the right chapter or table, users type a question into the Ask ACCA interface and receive a concise answer sourced from ACCA’s copyrighted materials. The tool is being positioned as straightforward to use, accurate to the underlying standard, and fast enough for both field technicians and support staff in the office. 

 

Real, Reliable Answers 

AI is an extremely powerful tool, but it’s often said that it’s only as good as its source material. When it comes to making sure the job is done right, relying on generic web content or whatever was pulled from an unvetted forum doesn’t exactly breed confidence.

“Ask ACCA is the only AI assistant powered directly by ACCA’s standards and manuals. That’s a big deal,” Gibson said. “Other tools might offer general guidance, but Ask ACCA delivers answers backed by the same trusted information that contractors rely on every day to ensure accurate, code-compliant work.” 

By limiting the tool’s knowledge base to ACCA materials and related normative guidance, the association is aiming to keep responses aligned with current codes and accepted best practices. 

 

Early Stages 

With Ask ACCA still in its early rollout phase, Gibson said contractor feedback has varied, but that’s something they expected going in.  

“It’s still early, so the feedback has been mixed — which is exactly what we expected at this stage,” Gibson said. “Some contractors jump right in and love having quick guidance pulled straight from the ACCA manuals, and others are still getting used to what an AI assistant can and can’t do.” 

As with other AI tools, Ask ACCA’s performance is expected to improve as more users interact with it and ACCA refines the experience. For the association, those interactions are already acting as a window into the types of questions technicians are asking in the field. 

“What’s most exciting for us is the range of questions coming in,” Gibson added. “That gives us real insight into where contractors are struggling, what topics need clearer training, and where future articles or tools should focus. Right now, Ask ACCA stays grounded in normative, code-based guidance, and that foundation is helping us shape what comes next.” 

 

Strong Starting Point 

When it comes to the app, Gibson stressed this is the starting point, not a finished product. The first release focused on quick, standards-based guidance, but for ACCA, that is only the beginning.  

“That said, we’re just getting started,” Gibson said. “In the future, we’re looking at expanding Ask ACCA to support more advanced capabilities. Our goal is to make the tool more powerful over time, always grounded in ACCA’s standards and built to make the job easier for HVACR professionals. Ultimately, we see Ask ACCA becoming a go-to resource for the field.” 

As the tool matures and usage grows, ACCA expects Ask ACCA to sit alongside design software, approved calculators, and the printed manuals themselves as another entry point into the same body of work. The aim is not to replace the standards, but to make them faster and more practical to access from wherever the job happens to be. 

Ask ACCA is currently available to ACCA members and licensed manual users.
