Common Autumn HVAC Issues | Climate Control

September 4, 2024

As we flip the calendar to September, many Pacific Northwesterners are looking forward to the cooler temperatures coming. This is in fact, one of the most beautiful times of year in Oregon! But because the autumn season brings a pretty wide range of outside temperatures – ranging from warm days to really cool nights – it’s common to see HVAC systems issues pop up. Whether you use furnace equipment or a heat pump, here are some common HVAC problems and how you can avoid them.

Faulty Thermostat

When temperatures change in the Northwest, you’ll need to adjust your thermostat accordingly. If you notice a problem with your device, call the experts at Climate Control right away. A faulty or malfunctioning thermostat could mean the temperatures inside your home are uncomfortable and not adjustable, and it could also mean your HVAC system is working harder than it needs to, in order to regulate the internal temperature. Over time, this could cause other issues with the unit, which could be expensive to repair or replace.

Dirty Air Filters

When summer heat is at its peak, your air conditioning system is working overtime to keep you comfortable. With heavy system use, your machine runs longer, which means there is more air passing through the filter. When this air runs through the filter to circulate through the ducts and internal components of the machine, the filters can get full or clogged with debris, contaminants, or pollutants. Make sure you clean or replace your air filters regularly – we recommend this every other month, especially if you are a pet owner. Pet dander and hair can easily accumulate in these filters, which can contribute to poor indoor air quality and greater wear and tear on the machine.

Neglected Professional Maintenance

Just like your car needs tune-ups and your body needs check-ups at the doctor’s office, your HVAC system needs routine maintenance, too. Regular, professional maintenance from our licensed and knowledgeable technicians at Climate Control should be performed annually on your machine. If you skip this, there could be a host of problems that pop up including heat exchanger malfunctioning, damaged or broken sensors, and more. These appointments not only allow us to spot and fix potential problem areas before they become a real headache, but we will also make sure things are running at peak efficiency, so your utility bill stays manageable.

Leaky Ductwork

If your HVAC system isn’t evenly distributing air, it could be due to leaky ductwork. Ducts can develop holes and gaps and this causes heat or cool air to escape. This translates to a machine that is working harder than necessary, and you might even notice a spike in your energy use or costs. We can help identify leaky ductwork and find a solution to get it fixed.

If you notice something amiss with your HVAC system this fall, let us help! Don’t attempt fixing things yourself, as do-it-yourself repairs can often cause more damage. We understand how important it is for you to have a machine that works reliably, so we will work hard to diagnose the issue and get things up and running as quickly as possible.
Maybe you need a new furnace or heat pump installed before the end of 2024. We can help with that too!
