Change Your Air Filter
One important task to check off on your home preparation list for the holidays is to change your air filter. By doing this you’ll be helping to enhance your home’s indoor air quality while enjoying additional savings on your utility bill. Air filtration helps reduce airborne particles containing viruses and reduces the chances of HVAC system failures related to a clogged filter. In other words, it’s an easy way to keep your household safe, healthy, and happy.
Keep Vents and Unit Clear
Make sure your Christmas tree and decorations are not blocking any indoor vents. Decorations can impede airflow if they’re in front of or near air vents. Position them at least three feet away from vents to keep warm air flowing all season long.
For outdoor decorations, be certain to keep them away from your HVAC unit. The system requires at least three feet clearance to run properly. Blocked air flow may not only damage components but also compromise system performance resulting in increased energy bills in the new year.
Don’t Cover Your Thermostat
Holiday decorations should not be covering your thermostat. When it’s covered, the thermostat can’t correctly gauge the temperature indoors. Your heating system won’t deliver the proper temperature, leading to either a chilly home or an uncomfortably warm one. The last thing you want is an improperly functioning HVAC system over the holidays.
