The EPA just dropped another proposed rule under its Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) program — one that could give HVACR pros more refrigerant flexibility in the years ahead. SNAP Rule 27, proposed on October 24, would add several new refrigerants to the list of acceptable options for systems like residential and light commercial air conditioners, heat pumps, chillers, and household refrigerators.
Under this proposal, refrigerants like HCR 4141, HFO-1234ze(E), and R-516A would be approved for use in certain applications, while existing listings for popular refrigerants would be updated to reflect new UL standards and safety certifications.
EPA says this move is part of its broader effort to support the industry’s transition toward lower-emission refrigerants, without compromising safety or performance.
The agency is currently accepting public comments on SNAP Rule 27.
