How To Know When To Replace Your AC System | Kitchener ON

During the warmer months, your air conditioner works hard to keep you comfortable. Though it may need a few repairs over the years, it can be difficult to tell when to stop repairing and start considering replacement. Let’s discuss what signs indicate it’s time to replace your air conditioner.

Lack of Cold Air

Various factors could cause your AC to lack cold air, including low refrigerant levels, a broken compressor, a leak, or more. All of these factors will leave you in the heat if not adequately addressed. A professional team can diagnose your issues and provide the best solutions.

Inefficient Airflow

Even if your AC provides cold air, it may be putting in more work than it should if it doesn’t provide efficient airflow. Inefficient airflow could mean your AC’s vents are damaged or severely clogged. It could also signify problems with the air handler. While the repairs might be less than the cost of a new unit, depending on age and condition, replacement may be the most cost-effective solution overall.

Constant Leaks

Your AC system should never need to be recharged. Occasionally, the charge may need to be adjusted by a professional. The refrigerant system is a closed loop. You should never need to add refrigerant. If your system is low on refrigerant, that indicates a leak somewhere in the system. These leaks are commonly in one of the two coils.

Other times, a leak in your indoor coil will cause the indoor unit to freeze over. As it thaws, you may see water outside and around the system. This is different from condensation water, which is part of normal operation and will be drained through the drain line or condensate pump.

If you notice water outside the system, it can indicate a leaking coil, failed condensate pump, or a safety float switch failure. A system with a refrigerant leak can quickly become costly to operate. Replacing a coil is a major repair, and depending on the age and condition of the rest of the system, replacing the system often makes more sense.

Your AC Is Making Unusual Noises

Any unusual grinding, banging, or rattling could mean trouble for your air conditioner. It could indicate the motor is malfunctioning or the compressor is failing, both of which can lead to costly repairs. If left unattended, a replacement may become necessary.

Your System Is Near the End of Its Service Life

The average system lasts between 10 and 13 years, shorter if you live near the coast. Once an air conditioner reaches the end of its life span, it starts needing to use more energy to do its job, meaning higher energy bills for you. Consider upgrading to a newer, more energy-efficient model to save money on energy and repair bills.
