Don’t Panic, Just Protect.
Home remodeling projects are exciting, but they can also be incredibly challenging, especially when it comes to protecting and maintaining your HVAC. Dust and debris generated by construction can put a real strain on your system if not managed properly. Making sure your HVAC is well-maintained during a remodel can save you not only from expensive repairs later but also keep your indoor air quality high.
Seal Off Vents and Registers
Remodels create debris by definition. When these airborne particles enter your vents, they can clog filters, damage internal components, and reduce air quality throughout your home. Instead, use plastic sheeting or magnetic vent covers to block airflow from entering the remodeling zones. This prevents this debris from being drawn into the ducts and being circulated throughout your home. If possible, also turn off the HVAC system where the work is being done If the system must remain on, make sure these vents are covered.
Replace Air Filters Frequently
Even with precautions, some junk may still enter your HVAC system during a remodel. Your air filters will be the first line of defense in trapping these particles and preventing them from reaching the system’s more delicate components. Consider inspecting filters weekly, especially in high-dust phases of the project, and purchasing ones with a high MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating to replace the ones you throw away.
Keep the Work Area Clean
One of the simplest ways to protect your HVAC system during a remodel is by minimizing the dust generated in the first place. Regular cleaning can make a significant difference in preventing this stuff from entering your ductwork. Encourage your contractors to sweep and vacuum frequently to reduce buildup.Consider using plastic sheeting or temporary walls to contain this construction dust to only the remodel area.
Schedule a Professional HVAC Inspection
After the remodeling project is done, schedule an HVAC inspection.. Even with the best efforts to protect your system, some debris may still find its way into the ducts and onto other equipment, potentially affecting performance and indoor air quality.
Consider Temporary HVAC
If the remodel involves extensive work or areas critical to your HVAC, invest in a portable air conditioner, heaters, or even a dehumidifier so you don’t have to run your heating and cooling system at all. You’ll protect the system without sacrificing too much indoor comfort.
