Danfoss has partnered with ENFOR to further develop innovative software to support utilities and energy companies that will help to save energy and cost. Other goals include carbon dioxide reductions and overall operational improvements for the utilities.
Founded in 2006, ENFOR provides energy forecasting and optimization solutions for the energy sector using artificial intelligence and big data processing.
Dec 7, 2021 – Turkey ratified Kigali Amendment
Turkey is the latest country to ratify the Kigali Amendment on Nov 10, 2021.
With this ratification, a total of 129 countries have signed this Amendment to reduce the usage of HFC refrigerants that caused global warming.
Dec 6, 2021 – Daikin North America Acquired Washington state companies Thermal Supply, Inc. and AirReps, LLC.
Headquartered in Seattle, Thermal Supply is headquartered in Seattle, Washington and is the largest distributor of residential and light commercial Daikin, Goodman®, and Amana® brand products in the Pacific Northwest.
AirReps is based in Bellevue, Washington and is the largest and most tenured manufacturer’s representative firm for premium HVAC equipment in the Pacific Northwest.
Nov 24, 2021 – GREE fined $91 million in U.S. over faulty dehumidifiers
Gree Electric Appliances of Zhuhai, China was fined $91 million for selling fire-prone dehumidifiers in the United States. The manufacturer waited a year before recalling the defective products. Over 2 million units were sold from 2007-2013 that could overheat and caught fire.

Carrier announces price increase up to 12% on North American commercial products, up to 10% on residential products and about 4% on HVAC parts and supplies effective January 10, 2022.
Nov 8, 2021 – Saint Lucia ratified Kigali Amendment
St. Lucia is the latest country to ratify the Kigali Amendment on Nov 2, 2021. St. Lucia is an island country with tropical climate in the West Indies.
With this ratification, a total of 128 countries have signed this Amendment to reduce the usage of HFC refrigerants that caused global warming.
Osaka, Japan – Nov 1, 2021 – Panasonic Verified the inhibitory effect of hydroxyl radicals contained in water on novel coronavirus variants
Panasonic Corporation has verified the inhibitory effect of hydroxyl radicals contained in water on novel coronavirus(SARS-CoV-2) variants, namely Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta. The test confirmed an inhibitory effect of over 99% on all five types of viruses after two hours of exposure.
Nov 1, 2021 – COP26 or UN Climate Change of The Parties is on in Glasgow, UK
The UK is hosting the 26th Climate Change from Oct 31, 2021 to Nov 12, 2021 in Glasgow. This conference will bring together the heads of state, climate experts and others to tackle the climate change. More about COP26 here.
Oct 29, 2021 – Daikin Applied Acquires Dynamic Controls Inc.(DCI)
Daikin Applied announced on Oct 11, 2021 the acquisition of DCI. DCI is a building systems integrator and is based in St. Louis, Missouri. The acquisition will enable Daikin Applied to link HVAC technologies with other building systems, such as security, life safety and energy management.
Falls Church, VA, U.S.A. – Oct 28, 2021 – PHCC Announced winners of 2021 National Apprentice Contest
There were three winners each from the Plumbing and HVAC apprentice contest.
A total of sixteen plumbing and seven HVAC apprentices from the USA took part in the contest from October 21st-22nd in Kansas City, Missouri. It was held during the PHCC—National Association’s CONNECT 2021 event. See the winners here.

Carrier has acquires Cavius, a company that produces smoke, heat, flood and carbon monoxide alarms for the residential market. The company from Denmark invented the world’s smallest photoelectric smoke alarm.
Italy, Oct 18, 2021 – New Water-Cooled Chiller from Mitsubishi Electric
This new i-FX2-W-G04 high efficiency water-cooled chiller is using inverter technology and is manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric Hydronics & IT Cooling Systems S.p.A
It is also using HFO R1234ze refrigerant which is a near zero Global Warming Potential refrigerant.
Oct 13, 2021 – Serbia ratified Kigali Amendment
Serbia is the latest country to ratify the Kigali Amendment on Oct 8, 2021.
With this ratification, a total of 127 countries have signed this Amendment to reduce the usage of HFC refrigerants that caused global warming.
Oct 12, 2021 – Airthings launches carbon dioxide detector
Airthings has launched the View C02 for business which will be able to detect the carbon dioxide level in the room for users to take actions to increase its level in the room by ventilating the room.
It can also sense temperature, humidity, light, noise and virus.
It can be powered using 6 AA batteries or USB-C and has a dimensions of 17cm X 9cm X 3.3cm.

USA – Oct 7, 2021 – ebm-papst builds new plant in USA
Ebm-papst did a groundbreaking ceremony to build a new plant at Telford, TN, USA on Tuesday.
ebm-papst is a global leader in producing fans and motors. This 12-hectare land will have 120 employees when in operation in summer next year.
Oct 4, 2021 – Carrier launches Toshiba Carrier Touchscreen Controller
Carrier recently launched a new Toshiba Carrier touchscreen controller in North America. This controller can connect up to 128 units of indoor units and is used in the VRF (variable refrigerant flow) systems.
This 7-inch color touchscreen allows the building managers to access their entire VRF system from a central location.
Sept 28, 2021 – India ratified Kigali Amendment
India is the latest country to ratify the Kigali Amendment on Sept 27, 2021.
With this ratification, a total of 126 countries have signed this Amendment to reduce the usage of HFC refrigerants that caused global warming.
Osaka, Japan – Sept 27, 2021 – New Panasonic Factory in Vietnam
Panasonic Japan has launched a new factory in Vietnam which is located in Binh Duong Province. This factory will be producing ceiling fans, ventilating fans and ceiling mount ventilating fans.

Sept 23, 2021 – SYSAQUA R32 air-cooled chillers and heat pumps from Systemair
Systemair has launched a range of air-cooled chillers and heat pumps that use R32 refrigerant that has a lower GWP compared to R410A.
These high efficiency units capacity range from 50-170kW. They are also EUROVENT certified.

Sept 17, 2021 – Carrier Chillers first Installation in UK using R-515B
Carrier UK Installed the first Carrier Chillers that uses R-515B refrigerant. The Carrier AquaForce® 30XW-VZE screw chillers were installed in an art gallery in the UK.
This refrigerant has a GWP or Global Warming Potential of less than 300 and has a highest safety rating of A1. A1 rating means that the refrigerant is non-toxic and non-flammable. Read more about refrigerants here.
Charlotte, N.C., U.S. – Sept 7, 2021 – Carrier finalized the acquisition of Guangdong Giwee Group
Carrier has completed the acquisition of HVAC manufacturer, the Giwee Group from China. The acquisition was first announced on June 3, 2021. The Giwee Group produces products such as variable refrigerant flow, modular chiller and light commercial air conditioning solutions. The brands being marketed include GIWEE, GCHV and CHIGO.
Sept 1, 2021 – Tunisia ratified Kigali Amendment
Tunisia is the latest country to ratify the Kigali Amendment on August 27, 2021.

Aug 11, 2021 – Rheem announced intention to acquire Friedrich Air Conditioning
Rheem on July 23, 2021 has announced its intention to acquire Friedrich Air Conditioning. Friedrich was established in the year 1883 and has been in business for 138 years. The HVAC company is based in San Antonio, Texas with manufacturing plant in Monterrey, Mexico.
Rheem was founded in 1925 and today produces heating, cooling, water heating, pool & spa heating and commercial refrigeration products.
Aug 9, 2021 – Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US Launched Virtual Showroom
Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US or METUS has launched the virtual showroom that features residential air conditioning and heat pumps products. Visitors will be able to view products, download catalogs and watch the videos of the products online.

Aug 3, 2021 – Broan-NuTone Develops Indoor Air Quality System
Called Overture System, you can now monitor and control the air quality in your house by using this system developed by Broan-NuTone.
The sensors detect the carbon dioxide, total volatile organic compound, PM2.5 particles, temperature and humidity in the house and automatically on the exhaust fan to remove them and bringing fresh air supply from the outside.
Monitoring of the IAQ is done by using the cloud-connected system apps where the historical data can be retrieved.
July 28, 2021 – ACCA New Marketing Masters Awards

July 17, 2021 is the 119th anniversary since Willis Haviland Carrier invented the first air conditioner to control the temperature and humidity of a printing company in 1902. Children of Carrier employees spoke why they love air conditioning to celebrate this day.

July 6, 2021 – Daikin Released about 300 Patents Free of Charge for R32
Daikin has released about 300 patents free of charge for the manufacturing and sales of air conditioners using R32 refrigerant. This will help to popularize this refrigerant which does not destroy the ozone layer and has lower GWP(Global Warming Potential) compared to R410A.

Zambia – Mar 22, 2021 – Zambia is the 115th country to ratify Kigali Amendment
Zambia ratified the Kigali Amendment which took effect on Mar 15, 2021 with the commitment as a developing country, to freeze HFC production and use in 2024, with an 80% reduction by 2045.
With this ratification, a total of 115 countries have signed this Amendment to reduce the usage of HFC refrigerants that caused global warming.

The US shipment of central air conditioners for Dec 2020 increased by 6% from about 303K to 321K compared to Dec 2019. The shipment of air-source heat pumps increased by 18% from 205K to 242K compared to Dec 2019.

Jan 22, 2021 – ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force Recommendations for Reducing Airborne Infectious
Aerosol Exposure
ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force has published a few recommendations in helping to reduce the airborne infectious aerosol exposure of pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2 virus. Some of the recommendations include:
- Public Health Guidance – Follow the recommendations by the health authorities such as wearing of masks, social distancing and sanitation.
- Ventilation, Filtration, Air Cleaning – Follow the standards of minimum outdoor airflow rates for ventilation, use of air filters and air cleaners to achieve at least MERV 13, using only effective air cleaners, etc.
- Air Distribution – Promote mixing of space air without causing strong air currents.
- HVAC System Operation
- System Commissioning – Verify that the HVAC system is functioning as per designed.

Carrier has made available the water-cooled chillers and heat pumps using the refrigerant R-515B which has a Global Warming Potential of less than 300. This refrigerant has a safety classification of A1 which is both non-toxic and non-flammable.
Houston – January 12, 2021 Daikin Acquires ABCO HVACR Supply + Solutions Company

Danfoss has announced the release of the second version of the industrial refrigeration evaporator controller EKE 400. It can support DX evaporators and can do defrost sequence for ammonia, CO2, HFC and HCFC based systems.
The CoolConfig software makes it easier to do the setting of multiple EKE400 in the refrigeration system.
It can also integrate with third party equipment through MODBUS communication where users can have access to most parameters in EKE400 which include gas concentration, alarm settings, set-points, etc.

Daikin has announced the appointment of Masaaki Miyatake as the new Daikin Middle East and Africa (MEA) Chairman and President. He joined Daikin in Japan as a sales engineer 30 years ago and joined Daikin MEA in Dubai in July 2020.
His team won the 2017 “Energy Conservation Grand Prize” and “Energy Conservation Center Chairman’s Award” when they developed an inverter heat pump modular chiller product.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Systems will launch R32 refrigerant single fan and multiple room outdoor unit air conditioners for the European market in December 2020.
Six models with 4, 5 and 5.5 hp capacity will be available using single-phase and three-phase alternating current. The compressor motor will be changed from distributed winding to concentrated winding type with better performance and lower standby power consumption.

Two Panasonic products – Aquarea J-Series Air Source Heat Pump and Cold Chain C02 refrigeration unit have been shortlisted in two categories for the RAC Cooling Awards.
The Aquarea J-Series uses R32 refrigerant which has zero impact on the earth’s ozone depletion layer and also less impact on global warming.
Cold Chain C02 refrigeration unit uses the environmental-friendly C02. This unit is also able to switch between chill or freeze mode.
The results of the awards will be announced virtually on 9th Dec 2020.

Carrier China will be providing HVAC solutions to improve the air quality of Guangzhou Respiratory Center through Carrier’s Healthy Buildings Program.
Thousands of airside products with ultra-violet lights to ensure good indoor air quality will be used.
Highly efficient chillers and heat pumps equipment will also be installed. The center which will have 1,200 beds is scheduled to be operational in the summer of 2021.

Carrier’s OptiCleanTM product has been named as one of TIME’s 100 Best Inventions of 2020. It was invented in respond to Covid-19 pandemic to provide safe environment for indoor air in schools, hospitals, homes and other applications.
It has a minimum of MERV 7 pre-filter and a HEPA filter. The HEPA filter can last up to 40,000 hours or 4 years of normal operations and maintenance.
The HEPA filter is able to remove 99.97% of contaminants including microbes as small as 0.3 microns.
The OptiCleanTM is also able to create a negative air-pressure in the space to prevent contaminated air from flowing out of the space, protecting occupants in other parts of the building. The contaminated air is trapped by the HEPA filter and clean air is discharged to the space.

Honeywell today launched the Electronic Air Cleaners with UV systems and IAQ sensors in helping to remove contaminants from the air as well as filter and disinfect them without significant drop in air flow in commercial buildings.

Daikin Industries, Ltd will provide a district cooling system for Tengah Town in Singapore.
This project will be carried out in collaboration with Singapore Power Group covering all residences in this smart city. 30% life cycle costs savings is realized at each household compared to individual air conditioners installment. Other public facilities will also have high energy-saving equipment.
A district cooling system is a cooling system that supplies water cooled from a high-efficiency modular chiller to fan coil units that are installed in homes and buildings. Charges will be based on a “subscription model” according to the time used.
Significant energy-savings will be achieved as air conditioners currently occupy 40% of the total electricity consumption at households.
The Tengah Town is a futuristic new city that will consist of 42,000 residences with a total area of 700 hectares. It will start accepting residents in 2023.

Panasonic Malaysia announced that it’s nanoeTMX technology is able to inhibit the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). The verification was done by Texcell. The hydroxyl radicals generated by nanoeTMX is able to inhibit pathogenic microbes (bacteria, fungi and viruses) and allergens, breaking down Particulate Matter (PM2.5) that have adverse effects on the human body.
