There’s a new obsession among young Americans: body wash. Specifically, a complicated, multi-step shower routine with pre- and post- shower lotion and fragrance layers to ensure you come out smelling like pistachio ice cream or a cinnamon bun.   

Experts chalk it up to yet another post-COVID phenomenon. When the masks came off, suddenly we could smell everything. And some people got weirded out, running to Target to stock up on lotions and scented soaps. Regular human smells? Not allowed.  

I actually do not like to smell like a cinnamon bun. My perfume of choice has been described as smelling like soap or a dryer sheet, although that probably illustrates the concept even better.  

Particularly for the 40-and-under crowd, the same obsession extends to air quality.   

If the younger generation is layering fragrances like it’s a competitive sport, they’re just as fixated on another invisible sensory experience: the air they breathe.   

  

A New Sensitivity  

Clean air used to be a nice-to-have. It wasn’t top of mind for the American public unless you had a health issue or were a full-on germaphobe. But now, several COVID years of “shared airspace makes you sick” later, you can’t just flip a switch and say shared airspace is now fine — especially for younger people who grew up with that mindset.  

The data backs it up. According to a 2025 survey by Fellowes, 77% of workers across the U.S. and Canada say it’s important to them that employers are transparent about the air they breathe on the job, a sentiment strongest among Millennials and Gen Z. More than two-thirds of Millennials and Gen Z respondents expressed concern about the long-term effects of poor indoor air quality, more than double the rate of older workers.

They’re even taking matters into their own hands: 53% say they open windows or bring plants and air purifiers to work. But 68% of U.S. workers believe employers — not building owners, government agencies, or employees themselves — bear responsibility for ensuring clean indoor air at work. And they’re not kidding around. Half of Gen Z respondents and 44% of Millennials said poor air quality at work would be grounds for quitting their job.  

In short, younger generations aren’t just noticing the air — they’re judging their workplaces by it.  

  

The Transparency Gap  

Only 61% of workers believe their employer is taking the right steps to ensure healthy IAQ, per the study, and only 52% describe the air in their workplace as very clean. A full 3 out of 4 workers report at least one air-quality concern in their workplace.  

When asked what solutions they prefer, workers favored installation of air purification units (49%), updating the HVAC system (45%), visible use of IAQ monitors (36%), and access to real-time IAQ data (36%).   

That sentiment isn’t just an HR headache. It’s a market signal HVAC pros should be reading loud and clear. In other words, your commercial clients are on the hook — and they’ll be looking for help.  

That’s where HVAC contractors can swoop in — not just to install equipment, but to deliver proof. Share that 44% stat, then offer a solution. Air quality monitoring? Dashboards? All of these are squarely in the HVAC contractor’s purview.  

And demand for IAQ could get even bigger. Making sure kids have healthy air to breathe seems to be one of the rare things Republicans and Democrats can agree on. Earlier this year, a bipartisan group of lawmakers reintroduced the Indoor Air Quality and Healthy Schools Act, which would direct the EPA to help states and local agencies assess and improve school air systems.  

If it passes, that could mean a surge in demand for IAQ assessments, upgrades, and verification — exactly the kind of technical expertise HVAC pros are trained to provide.  

  

Turning Proof Into Profit  

HVAC professionals have something no other field can claim: a deep understanding of airflow, filtration, ventilation, and system balance. But the race to “own” IAQ transparency is already underway.  

Tech firms and software startups are marketing plug-and-play IAQ dashboards directly to employers. Facility managers are buying sensors online and uploading data to their own systems. That’s fine — until it’s not. Without true expertise, those readings can be misleading or meaningless.  

If contractors don’t take the lead, the HVAC industry could end up playing catch-up in its own market.  

Ready to dive in? Here’s what this means in practical business terms:  

1. Add IAQ audits to your service offerings. Offer a baseline air-quality test before every major project. It’s a great upsell and establishes a data benchmark for future work.  

2. Offer solutions that are an easy ‘yes’ for executives. A neat and tidy package that facilities management can put in the budget — how about a subscription-based IAQ-as-a-Service contract? — will appeal to CEOs looking for a quick fix to that looming 44% turnover stat.  

3. Bundle monitoring with maintenance. Include sensors, dashboards, or quarterly IAQ reports in your maintenance contracts. That makes your client “stickier” and your revenue more predictable. According to the Fellowes survey, the preferred methods of sharing IAQ data across U.S. workers are the company newsletter or internal communications (36%), followed by a digital dashboard in the lobby or break room (27%) or room monitors (26%).  

4. Market visibility. When you can show a client’s real-time IAQ metrics — and they improve over time — you’re not just selling HVAC service. You’re selling confidence.  

5. Target the right markets. Schools, offices, healthcare, and fitness centers are prime candidates. They’re under public pressure to provide healthy environments and often have funding to invest in it.  

For HVAC contractors, this is a rare convergence of technical expertise, public demand, and policy momentum. The window is open — but it won’t stay that way forever. If you don’t claim the role of IAQ transparency expert in your market, someone else will.
