Maryland Rolls Out $200 Million in Energy Rebates to Offset Utility Costs

Maryland homeowners will soon see real relief on their energy bills. The Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) has approved $200 million in direct energy rebates designed to help residents manage higher utility costs while encouraging investment in efficient HVAC systems and home upgrades.

The rebate program, announced by WBOC News, is funded by the state’s EmPOWER initiative and will issue credits to ratepayers over the coming months. These rebates can be combined with existing utility programs and federal incentives for even greater savings.

How This Helps Homeowners

The new state funding complements existing EmPOWER Maryland programs run by utilities such as BGE, Pepco Maryland, and Potomac Edison. Together, these initiatives reward customers for installing high-efficiency HVAC equipment, water heaters, and smart thermostats.

When combined with the federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C), which offers up to $3,200 in annual tax credits, Maryland residents can offset much of the cost of upgrading aging systems before the federal credit expires on December 31, 2025.

What to Expect Next

According to MEA officials, the rebate rollout will occur in two waves, providing both immediate bill relief and long-term efficiency benefits. Homeowners are encouraged to complete a Home Energy Audit through their local utility to determine eligibility for equipment incentives.

Participating contractors can also help ensure systems meet the ENERGY STAR standards required for state and federal rebate programs.

Why Act Now

With BGE’s midstream HVAC rebates recently reduced and federal credits set to expire at the end of 2025, this new round of Maryland funding arrives at the perfect time. Acting before program caps are reached could save homeowners hundreds or even thousands on heating and cooling upgrades that lower monthly energy use for years to come.
