Both Maryland and Washington, DC have adopted forward-looking BEPS aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from commercial buildings:
Maryland’s BEPS (Climate Solutions Now Act of 2022):
- Targets commercial buildings 35,000 sq. ft. and larger
- Requires a 20% reduction in net direct GHG emissions by 2030
- Goal of net-zero direct emissions by 2040
DC’s BEPS (Clean Energy DC Omnibus Act of 2018):
- Applies to buildings over 25,000 sq. ft.
- Performance measured against ENERGY STAR scores
- Buildings must meet or exceed the standard or improve performance significantly during each compliance cycle
