R410a (also known as Puron) refrigerant is the most commonly used refrigerant used in residential heating and air conditioning systems in the United States since phasing out R22 in 2010. Phasing out R410a refrigerant has begun with new systems that are manufactured are now moving to other refrigerants such as R454b, R32
The refrigerant R410a being phased out due to its high Global Warming Potential (GWP), even though it has zero ozone depletion potential.
The phase‑out is part of the U.S. AIM Act, which mandates a gradual reduction of HFCs. Read more Here EPA.GOV
Starting January 1, 2025, the EPA prohibits new residential and light commercial HVAC systems from using high‑GWP refrigerants like R‑410A.

2025 The Major turning point
- The use of R‑410A in new HVAC systems becomes restricted starting January 2025 in the United States with most all manufacturing no longer producing new systems with new, alternative refrigerants such as R454b and R32
- New systems must use low‑GWP A2L refrigerants (e.g., R‑454B, R‑32).
- Existing R‑410A systems can still be serviced.

2026 and beyond
- There will be a continued push for reductions in allowable HFC production and imports.
- Existing systems can still be serviced, but R410a refrigerant will is and will continue to become more expensive over time.
Long‑term
- R‑410A is not banned for servicing existing equipment, but its availability will shrink as production quotas tighten. Refrigerant used for repairs will is increasing now and will keep increasing in cost.
- R‑410A is an HFC (Hydrofluorocarbons which are composite chemicals made from Hydrogen, Fluorine and Carbon) with a high GWP, contributing to climate change.

- The EPA is pushing the industry toward low‑GWP alternatives as part of broader HFC reductions.
The most common replacements for residential HVAC systems in the United States are:

R‑32
- Lower GWP
- Higher efficiency
- Mildly flammable (A2L), requiring updated equipment
R‑454B

- Even lower GWP
- Designed as a direct replacement for R‑410A in many new systems
- Also mildly flammable (A2L)
Most all manufacturers have already designed out R410 and are currently producing only R454b or R32 refrigerant systems.
✔️ Your existing R‑410A system is NOT obsolete, you can continue using it, and technicians can still service it.
✔️ Repairs will get more expensive as production decreases, R‑410A prices will rise.
✔️ New systems after 2025 will use R‑32 or R‑454B
If you’re planning a replacement soon, you may want to consider systems using the new refrigerant models.
Deciding whether to repair or replace your current system?
Consider the following
- Age of your unit and how well it is running
- Expected repair costs over time (these costs will become more expensive
- Efficiency differences, newer models are higher efficiency
HVAC Technology is always evolving to meet consumer’s needs and EPA requirements. New systems are far more energy efficient and safer to use while providing optimal heating, cooling and higher indoor air quality for your home.
Your HVAC System is the most important equipment in your home and at times can be the most costly. Ways of reducing the costs with improving comfort and health are all good reasons to consider a new system now, before the older R410a systems become too costly in repairs or obsolete altogether.
