R-22 Freon and What It Means for My AC Unit

Older air conditioning units still need regular maintenance and tune-ups, but what happens when your ac units refrigerant is not manufactured anymore? Worried you might need to replace your AC unit?

What Is R-22 Refrigerant and How It Affects Minnesota AC Units in 2025

R-22 Refrigerant, commonly known as freon, is a common part of residential air conditioning units that is essential in cooling hot air and creating that cool breeze we all love and admire.

There are numerous types of refrigerant and prior to 2015 was one of the most popular refrigerants used in air conditioning units throughout the country. However, in 2020, the manufacturing and import of R22 Refrigerant stopped completely in the United States – limiting the supply for maintaining and recharging ac units.

How To Know If My AC Unit Uses R-22?

Find your air conditioning’s nameplate, typically found on the backside of your AC unit. Check at the top of the nameplate for the manufacturing or ‘MFR Date’ for any date built prior to 2010. If you can’t find the date, you can also look up the brand and serial number or refrigerant type to see if your unit utilizes R-22.

What Does the R-22 Refrigerant Ban Mean For My AC Unit?

As of 2010 the manufacturing of air conditioning units that utilize R22 stopped, and with the 2020 import ban, the only way for your air conditioning unit to be recharged, maintained or remain cool and functional this summer is by finding and utilizing any recycled, reclaimed or stockpiled refrigerant.
