Ready, Set, Winter: A Quick Guide to Prepping Your Heating and Plumbing

As the leaves fall and temperatures drop in New Jersey, it’s time to break out the sweaters, sip hot cocoa, and… prepare your home’s heating system and plumbing for winter!

While it might not sound as fun as cozying up by the fire, a little prep work now can save you a lot of trouble (and money) once winter sets in. At C&C Air Conditioning, Heating, Plumbing & Electric, we want to make sure your home is ready to handle whatever winter throws its way, so here’s a guide to get you started!

1. Inspect Your Outdoor Unit

If you have an outdoor unit, don’t let it get buried in leaves, dirt, or snow. Before winter hits, clear away any debris around the unit, and make sure there’s enough clearance for proper airflow. This will help prevent potential issues when you need your system to kick into high gear.

2. Replace Those Filters (and Keep Replacing Them)

Here’s a simple task that makes a huge difference – change your air filters. Your system’s filters do more than just keep dust and debris out of the air. Filters help keep your system running smoothly. Dirty filters can restrict airflow, making your system work harder and potentially shortening its lifespan. So, before you kick your heater into high gear, swap out that old, dirty filter for a fresh one. It is recommended to change your filters every 1-3 months; more frequently if you have shedding pets.

3. Test Your Thermostat

Your thermostat might be small, but it’s mighty! Before winter gets going, test your thermostat to ensure it works properly. Is it reading the temperature correctly? Is your system responding when you adjust the settings?

If you’re still using an older, manual thermostat, consider upgrading to a programmable or smart thermostat. These devices allow you to create heating schedules that fit your lifestyle which can help save you money during the cold months.

4. Seal Drafts and Insulate

We know you’re not a fan of drafts, and neither is your heating system. Gaps around doors, windows, and even in your ductwork can let that precious warm air escape, forcing your system to work harder to keep your home cozy. Take some time to walk around your home and feel for any drafts. Seal them up with weatherstripping or caulk.

And don’t forget about your ductwork! Leaky ducts can waste a significant amount of the heat your system produces. Adding insulation to your ducts, especially those running through unheated spaces like attics or basements, can prevent heat loss and improve your system’s efficiency.

5. Insulate Your Pipes

To keep your plumbing system running efficiently during the cold months, insulate any exposed pipes in unheated areas like basements, attics, and crawl spaces. Insulating the pipes helps them maintain a consistent temperature, reducing the risk of inefficient water flow.

Bonus Tip: Be sure to remove hoses and turn off water supply to exterior hose bibs to avoid freezing this winter!

6. Check for Leaks and Repair Them

Before winter sets in, inspect your home’s plumbing for any small leaks, especially around faucets, showerheads, and under sinks. Even minor leaks can become bigger problems during colder months. Fixing these issues now will not only conserve water but also help maintain pressure and prevent further damage to your plumbing system.
