Staying Cozy & Efficient This Season | Kitchener ON

As the cooler weather is coming in, it’s time to get out the sweaters and holiday decorations for your home. It’s the time of the year where everyone can enjoy more family time, which was once unimaginable during the heat of the summer. You can enjoy the cooler weather, however, the holiday season means your energy bill might increase due to your usage of heat.

At Max Air Conditioning & Heating, we know everything you need to know about how to save energy and money while heating your home. Here are some energy savings tips you may not know about!

Energy Conservation Tips to Follow This Season

Replace HVAC Filters

While it may not look as if it’s important, it is. The air filter is there to create an airflow after trapping dirt particles, mold, bacteria, allergens and more. Another important factor is if you haven’t replaced it, the filter becomes difficult to create airflow due to the blockage from the buildup of dirt, dust and more. This may increase the usage of the HVAC as the airflow isn’t going smoothly to heat up the area.

Get Heater Maintenance

It’s important to have inspections at least twice a year to make sure your HVAC system is functionally correct. If your heater isn’t working smoothly, it will draw a lot of energy in order to heat up your home.

Getting an inspection can help prevent your heater from breaking down, saving you lots of money. Here at Max Air, we may recommend you a furnace tuneup to make sure things go smoothly this winter within your HVAC system.

Keep Your Thermostat at or Below 68 Degrees

In order to make sure you don’t overwork the heater, the Department of Energy recommends keeping your set temperature at or below 68 degrees Fahrenheit. They also suggest lowering your temperature 7-10 degrees for at least 8 hours a day in order to save at least 10% on heating costs.

You can also save energy by lowering the thermostat below 68 degrees during the night or if you’re away from home.

Cover up Gaps and Cracks

Before it starts to get older, covering the places where the air can escape can help you save energy and money. Cold air will leak inside the house which can make the heater continue working on heating the area.

According to Energy Star, In a typical home, about 20% of the air is lost due to leaks, holes, and poorly connected ducts. Covering the area where air can leak will help the HVAC system not run overtime than it should run.

Switch Your Ceiling Fan to Clockwise

Reversing your ceiling fan to spin clockwise will send the warmer air towards your ceiling downwards, keeping you a little warmer and saving a little extra cash.
