What should I do before turning on my air conditioning?
Luckily for us all, you don’t have to be a HVAC expert to detect signs of damage or impending malfunction. Simply giving the different components of your air conditioner a visual inspection can tell you a lot.
Here are 5 tips for getting your AC ready for spring:
1. Check the filters
All AC units contain one or more air filters that are designed to prevent grime, dust, debris, fungal spores, and other particulates from contaminating your indoor air. These filters inevitably get dirty over time, so they must be regularly replaced or cleaned (if they’re washable) to prevent clogging.
If you’ve been using your AC to heat your home during the winter, the filters will probably need to be washed or replaced.
2. Look at the different parts of your AC
Are there any leaves, sticks, or other debris piled up around the exterior unit of your AC? If so, clear them out. If any small animals have set up shop inside the outdoor unit, give your local wildlife helpers a call so they can come over and relocate them.
Give the lines a look over and make sure they’re properly insulated. If there are any water stains or other signs of a leak near your indoor AC unit, call for HVAC service immediately and refrain from using the AC until the problem has been addressed.
3. Inspect your ducts
If your air conditioner is connected to the ductwork in your home, make sure to remove the vent covers and look inside. Wash or replace dirty filters. If your ducts are dirty or you notice any signs of damage, you should have them examined by an expert.
4. Reprogram your thermostat
It’s a small fix, but after months of having your thermostat set to heat and high temperatures, remember to reprogram the temperature settings when you switch to air conditioning. Go through each time and day setting available to you and adjust to you r preferred comfort zone. If you have a battery powered thermostat, be sure to change the batteries as well.
5. Get a professional tune-up
By far the most reliable way to prevent malfunctions and keep your AC working correctly is to schedule annual or bi-annual tune-ups with a trusted professional.
A GAC Services trained technician will do things such as:
- Check refrigerant pressure and the amp draw of the indoor and outdoor motor. Oil them if necessary.
- Inspect and test the thermostat and safety controls
- Examine the ductwork for leaks and contamination
- Check the drain pan and clean the drain line if necessary
- Assess the health of components such as the compressor, blower wheels, air handler, condenser, etc.
- Check the electrical wiring in outdoor and indoor units
When in doubt, call the caring professionals at GAC Services to get a full checkup done on your HVAC system. We go through all the same steps we’ve laid out in addition to a few others that help to keep your HVAC system running without issues for longer.
