Troubleshooting your heat system begins with a few common sense checks. Whether you have a heat pump, gas furnace, oil furnace or boiler, there are several things you can check before calling in the professionals. Checking these things first can save you a lot of aggravation and possibly money as well.

Thermostat or Controls

Thermostat in heat modeChecking your thermostat or control first is the best place to start troubleshooting your heating issues. There are a few things to check regarding the thermostat:

  • Are there any errors on the thermostat? Is there power to your thermostat. If it is powered by battery, you may need to change the battery.
  • Make sure your thermostat is set to “Heat” mode.
  • Be sure the temperature selection is set above the current room temperature by more than 2 degrees.

Air Filter(s)/ Vents and Returns

Change Air FiltersChange Air FiltersYour air filters can become clogged and restrict the air flow which can cause the unit to shut off. Make sure your air filters are clean. They need to be changed every three months or every month if you have pets or high traffic.

Check all your vents, registers and returns to make sure they are clean and clear of any dirt, hair, debris. Be sure all registers, vents have enough air flowing from them. Clogs, crimps or leakages from the ductwork can affect the warm air flow into your home. See More About Ductwork Here

Shut Off Switch/ Valve

Gas ValveGas ValveMany gas or oil units will have a master shut off switch. Make sure that if your system has a shut off switch that it is turned on. If you have a gas or oil valve, make sure it is fully open to provide gas.

Circuit Breakers/ Fuses

Circuit Breaker BoxCircuit Breaker BoxNext look at your home’s circuit breakers or fuses to make sure that none of the breakers are tripped or fuses blown. If you do need reset the breaker, do it only once. A circuit breaker can be tripped and still look like it is on. Therefore, it is wise to just reset it anyway to be sure. Locate the circuit breaker to your air conditioning unit and turn it off, then click it back on. If there is a blown fuse replace the fuse.

If the breaker continues to cut off or fuse continues to blow, it is time to call a professional.

Radiator or Heat Distribution Problems

If you have cold radiators, bleed radiators through the valve to remove trapped air. If you experience uneven heating, check for blockages, closed dampers or problems with the ductwork.

Strange Noises

Strange noised such as banging or clanking could indicate trapped air, loose parts, or failing components. If you hear a whistling sound, this can be caused by dirty filters or restricted airflow.

When you need a Professional

Once these steps have been checked and your system is still not working or running properly, it is time to call your certified heating specialist. There are many components that if they fail can cause your system to not operate. Any of these issues should only be addressed by a licensed professional or damage can occur. Also a warranty can be voided and there can be costly and potentially dangerous hazards.
