WASHINGTON — Thermostat Recycling Corp. (TRC) has launched its 15th annual Banish Mercury Off the Planet (BMOP) competition, continuing its long-standing recognition of HVACR distributors that are committed to removing mercury-containing thermostats from the environment.
The contest highlights companies that demonstrate exceptional leadership in environmental stewardship through thermostat recycling, a TRC press release said. Participating wholesalers are automatically entered when they return collected thermostats through the company’s nationwide recycling program. With more than 3,600 collection sites across the U.S., TRC provides a convenient way for contractors and service technicians to safely dispose of thermostats that contain mercury.
The 2026 BMOP contest runs through Saturday, Oct. 31, and winners will be recognized in three categories.
“Each year, our recycling partners show an unwavering commitment to keeping mercury out of the environment,” said Danielle Myers, TRC’s executive director. “Their leadership continues to drive meaningful progress in public health protection and sustainability across the HVACR industry.”
The categories in the competition are: 1) highest total pounds of mercury collected; 2) highest average pounds of mercury collected per branch location; and 3) highest branch participation rate (for organizations with more than five locations).
Winners will be announced and publicly recognized in December.
Past winners include Johnstone Supply, Refrigeration Sales Corp., Geary Pacific, G.W. Berkheimer Co. Inc.; and Meier Supply Co. Inc.
