7 Signs You Need AC System Maintenance

7 Signs You Need AC System Maintenance

If you haven’t already, it’s time to start up your air conditioning system. That means it’s also time for spring AC system maintenance. You have probably heard experts (like us) recommend yearly maintenance, but why is it so important? And how can you be sure your system really needs it?

Here are some common signs that your system needs air conditioning maintenance service, and the payoff you get from investing in maintenance, even (especially!) if your system seems fine.

1. System age

To maintain peak performance and prevent unexpected issues, air conditioning systems, regardless of age, need periodic maintenance. As systems age, parts begin to wear, coils get grimy and can’t transfer heat well, and drains and pans get clogged and can lead to water leaks. Parts like belts, pulleys, and electrical components get worn. If you go too long without service, system performance declines and breakdowns become more likely.

2. Neglected AC system maintenance

If you haven’t had AC service in a couple of years or longer, chances are your filters and coils are clogged, which puts a strain on the system and can damage the compressor. Over time, system performance will decline, which affects not only comfort conditions but also your electric bills. Plus, the risk of a breakdown due to part failure increases the longer you go without service.

3. Frequent repair issues

Does it seem like you’re calling for an AC repair every year? Without maintenance, the issues can pile up: frozen coils, water leaks, refrigerant leaks, poor air flow and more. The fact is, investing in AC system maintenance every spring can prevent more expensive and inconvenient breakdowns all summer long.

4. Inadequate cooling

If your AC is not cooling your space as well as it used to, that doesn’t necessarily mean you need a system replacement. Problems like hot and cold spots, failure to reach the set temperature, and inadequate air flowing from the registers can often be resolved with routine maintenance and some simple system adjustments.

5. Running constantly

Does your system seem to run all the time as it struggles to reach the set temperature? This problem is a sign of a strain on the system. A common cause is clogged filters, which reduces air flow, forcing the unit to run longer and work harder. Eventually the coils can freeze up, which can result in an expensive repair. Be sure to have your filters changed at least twice per year as part of AC system maintenance.

6. Noisy operation

Neglected air conditioners can make some very strange and annoying sounds that disrupt work, sleep, and family activities. Common causes include clogged filters, worn blower belts, and moving parts that need simple oiling – all issues that AC service can take care of. A system inspection can also reveal issues that can be easily repaired.

7. Rising electricity bills

Have you noticed your electricity usage getting higher every summer? It’s not just hotter weather. If your system has not been cleaned and tuned up in a while, its efficiency is declining. That means it needs to run longer to produce the same (or less) cooling. The more it runs, the more electricity it uses, and the more your bills go up.
