DOAS Helps Pet Alliance Maintain Comfort, IAQ

Every day, Pet Alliance provides veterinary care, lifesaving medical services, and adoption opportunities that give thousands of dogs and cats a second chance. Located in Orlando, Florida, the organization serves as one of Central Florida’s leading animal welfare providers, offering comprehensive veterinary services while connecting pets with loving families.

Supporting that mission requires more than compassionate caregivers; it also requires an indoor environment that promotes comfort, health, and reliability. From animal housing and treatment areas to adoption spaces, offices, and public gathering areas, every space within the facility depends on consistent ventilation and indoor air quality.

To help meet those needs, Pet Alliance partnered with AIT Mechanical and Nelson & Company to implement a dedicated outdoor air solution featuring three Addison PREK Dedicated Outdoor Air (DOAS) rooftop units. Working together, the project team developed a ventilation strategy designed to support the facility’s day-to-day operations while providing dependable long-term performance.

The Challenge

Animal care facilities create unique HVAC challenges that differ from many traditional commercial buildings. Throughout the day, employees, volunteers, visitors, and animals occupy a variety of spaces, each with different ventilation demands and occupancy levels.

Maintaining indoor air quality is essential to creating a comfortable environment for everyone inside the building. Introducing fresh outdoor air is a critical part of that process, but in Orlando’s hot and humid climate, untreated outdoor air can increase cooling loads, elevate indoor humidity, and place additional demand on HVAC equipment.

The project required a solution capable of conditioning outdoor ventilation air before it entered the building while integrating seamlessly into the facility’s overall HVAC strategy. In addition, the equipment needed to coordinate with the building’s mechanical and controls systems to ensure reliable operation across the entire facility.

The Solution

Working closely with AIT Mechanical and Addison manufacturer’s representative Nelson & Company, Addison supplied three PREK Dedicated Outdoor Air (DOAS) rooftop units specifically selected to meet the ventilation requirements of the facility.

The PREK units were designed to independently condition outdoor air before it entered occupied spaces, reducing the load placed on the primary HVAC equipment while delivering fresh, conditioned ventilation air throughout the building.

Because the PREK units operate as part of the facility’s integrated mechanical system, they help support stable indoor conditions while providing the flexibility needed for a dynamic animal care environment. The result is a coordinated solution that balances ventilation, comfort, and long-term operational performance.

“Addison’s PREK units provided a dependable ventilation solution that integrated smoothly into the overall mechanical system,” Jose Cinton, AIT Mechanica, said. “The collaboration between all project partners helped make the installation a success.”

Designed for the Application

Dedicated outdoor air systems have become an increasingly important component of modern HVAC design, particularly in facilities where indoor air quality and humidity control are priorities. By conditioning outdoor ventilation air independently, a DOAS allows the primary HVAC equipment to focus on maintaining indoor temperatures while the ventilation system efficiently manages the outside air load.

For Pet Alliance, this approach helps create healthier, more consistent indoor conditions throughout the facility. Whether caring for animals recovering from medical procedures, supporting veterinary staff during daily operations, or welcoming families looking to adopt a pet, properly conditioned ventilation air contributes to a more comfortable environment for everyone inside the building.

Addison’s PREK platform was selected because it delivers dependable dedicated outdoor air performance while integrating seamlessly into the building’s overall HVAC strategy.

“Providing properly conditioned outdoor air is an important part of creating healthy indoor environments,” Gus Olivera, Vice President of Innovation, Addison, said. “The PREK platform is designed to efficiently manage ventilation air while supporting the overall HVAC system, making it an excellent fit for facilities like Pet Alliance.”

Collaboration Drives Success

Like many successful commercial HVAC projects, the Pet Alliance installation was the result of strong collaboration among the owner, mechanical contractor, manufacturer’s representative, and equipment manufacturer.

Working together throughout the project allowed the team to develop a coordinated solution that met the facility’s ventilation requirements while integrating smoothly into the building’s overall mechanical design. From equipment selection through installation, each partner played an important role in delivering a reliable HVAC solution that supports Pet Alliance’s mission.

“This project required close coordination between the HVAC equipment and controls,” Dave Marini, Nelson & Company, said. “Addison’s dedicated outdoor air solution fit seamlessly into the facility’s overall design and provided the performance the project required.”
