The AIM Act has led to the shortage of refrigerant supply like R-410A, and now the EPA is counting on recovery and reclaim to avoid potential shortages. Previously, EPA reported that only small amounts of HFCs were actually being complained, and of those in 2020, a mere 1.6% were ready for reuse. However, that trend may be changing as the EPA reported that between 2021 and 2022, HFC reclamation saw a 40% increase. In 2023 compared to 2022, it saw a 20% increase. But, that doesn’t mean everyone is taking their chances. As a response to the AIM Act, the Department of Defense (DoD) has begun stockpiling HFC refrigerants for military refrigeration and air conditioning equipment. And just how much? $90 million worth, according to a press release from the department. This investment will support various military applications that include refrigeration, fire suppression, and air conditioning systems. The AIM Act regulates the production and consumption levels of HFCs, but military services and government agencies rely on systems using HFCs in order to maintain operational readiness and also, ensure the safety of personnel and equipment.
