Dog Urine Can Damage Your AC Condenser

A Surprising Cause of Air Conditioning Damage

When an air conditioner stops cooling properly, the cause may be something homeowners never expected. In an ABC7 Eyewitness News report, Air-Tro technician Esteban Yunez explains how dog urine can damage an outdoor AC condenser and potentially cause a refrigerant leak. The report also covers the effects of increased humidity on HVAC systems and shares practical maintenance tips to help homeowners keep their equipment running properly.

Keep Your Air Conditioning System in Good Shape

A little preventive care can help you avoid unexpected AC problems. Replace your air filter regularly, keep the area around your outdoor condenser clear, and consider installing a barrier to prevent pets from urinating on the equipment.

For the barrier, leave at least three feet of clearance on all sides so airflow isn’t restricted, and include a gate so technicians can still access the unit. If your dog does urinate on the condenser, rinse the area gently with a garden hose (low pressure only) as soon as possible. Avoid harsh cleaners, which can worsen corrosion. Scheduling professional maintenance twice a year – once before cooling season and once before heating season – also helps catch small issues before they become expensive repairs.
