Summary:
In collaboration with OLIN, The Hudson River Park Trust, Alpine Construction, and Danish playground manufacturing equipment firm, Monstrum, Koolfog provided a sensory-rich, immersive fog effect for a sculptural play feature. This installation is part of the Hudson River Park’s Pier 26 Science Playground. Designed to inspire and educate children, the imaginative Science Playground has been created as a recreational space for play opportunities as well as science and environmental programming. In keeping with the Hudson River’s natural ecosystem, the playground is anchored by two endangered native species, the Atlantic and short-horned sturgeons, crafted as whimsical play structures. Surrounded by climbing nets, accessible mobility ramps, safety surfacing, and interactive features, children are encouraged to engage in nature-based, interactive play.
Koolfog fog poles, high-pressure distribution network, and high-pressure pump were essential components in the design and installation of the sculptural features representative of native Hudson River “grass shrimp”. Found within the 4000 square foot marine-centric science playground, kids can be found climbing inside fish, exploring anatomy, and interacting with the environment. The shrimp sculptures nestle amidst stylized grass fog poles. Also nicknamed “shrimp misters”, these sculptures echo how the shrimp live in the wild while fostering a connection between play and aquatic ecology. These fog poles provide a cool zone during higher temperature weather, while the shorter foggers draw children into a multi-sensory experience in this wildlife wonderland.
Koolfog Technical Details
The fog poles were custom fabricated in varying lengths and installed at precise angles to achieve a dynamic, sculptural aesthetic. Each pole was powder-coated in carefully selected shades to resemble strands of sea grass, blending harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. Fogging elements were strategically positioned closer to ground level to produce a subtle, immersive haze that evokes the sensation of underwater movements…similar to rising air bubbles or the swirling of sand in a tidal current.
Each fog pole integrates Koolfog nozzles, mounted flush to the pole tops, ensuring a seamless, low-lying fog effect that contributes to the visual illusion of an aquatic environment. Assembly and installation strategies were coordinated with Monstrum, to help facilitate accurate field execution with the installation contractor.

The Oasis Series High-Pressure Pump was installed at a discreet distance from the active play zone to reduce audible impact while preserving visual access for routine servicing and system programming. To meet the client’s request for dynamic control, Koolfog specified a programmable timer system capable of 365-day scheduling. This allows for multiple fog activation pulses per hour, with adjustable durations, giving the client complete flexibility in managing both the frequency and intensity of the fogging experience.
Production Details & Challenge Solution:
This project required close coordination between multiple stakeholders to ensure the fog feature was seamlessly integrated into the overall design and installation process. Koolfog collaborated extensively with the landscape architecture firm, OLIN, the playground designer and manufacturer, Monstrum, and the installation contractor, Alpine Construction, to align all elements of the system with the architectural and functional goals of the Pier 26 Science Playground.
Given that the Koolfog team would not be present during on-site installation, it was critical that every detail be meticulously planned and communicated in advance. Comprehensive installation documentation, precise specifications, and coordinated drawing markups were developed to guide the field team and ensure successful implementation without direct on-site supervision. This proactive collaboration helped ensure the fog system was integrated efficiently and accurately, preserving the intended aesthetic and functional experience.
Maintenance Simplified
Although Koolfog systems are engineered for commercial-grade durability and long-term performance, routine maintenance is essential to ensure continued reliability and optimal operation. Components such as fog and mist nozzles, distribution lines, and fittings may require periodic replacement or upgrades over time. To support this, clients like the Hudson River Park Trust benefit from clear documentation and detailed maintenance manuals that facilitate scheduling, upkeep, and part identification.
In this case, the fog pole installation required specific customizations, including tamper-resistant screws and spare nozzles to align with site durability and safety standards. Koolfog promptly provided the appropriate replacement parts and offered guidance on obtaining touch-up paint kits matched precisely to the custom powder coat finish specified by the project designers. This ensured visual consistency while supporting long-term system integrity and aesthetic preservation.
