ABBOTSFORD, British Columbia, Canada — EstimateKit has released a free HVAC Labor Rate Calculator that helps contractors determine what they actually need to bill per hour to stay profitable, rather than basing prices off what the shop down the road charges.
The calculator takes a shop’s technician wages, labor burden, fixed overhead, billable hour efficiency, and target net margin and returns the hourly rate required to hit that margin. It is free, requires no account, and runs in a browser on a phone or a desktop.
Underpriced labor is one of the most common and least visible margin problems in residential service. A shop can carry a healthy gross margin on equipment and still lose money on service calls because its labor rate was set years ago and never rebuilt as wages, insurance, and truck costs moved, an EstimateKit press release said. The gap compounds quietly across every hour billed.
Founder Travis Paivarinta grew up around small business and watched most of his friends go into the trades. When he started looking at what software was available to them, he found a gap.
“Every tool I looked at was either built for shops running twenty-plus trucks and priced accordingly, or it was cheap and did not actually do the job,” said Paivarinta. “My friends running two- and three-truck operations were stuck doing this math on the back of an invoice, or not doing it at all. I grew up in small business. The whole point of EstimateKit is giving those shops the same tools the big guys have, without the enterprise price tag.”
