In honor of ACHR NEWS’ 100th anniversary, we decided to settle one of the industry’s most important questions the only reasonable way: with a tournament bracket. We started with 16 HVACR innovations spanning a century of keeping people comfortable, and we’re letting all of you decide which one deserves to be crowned the greatest of all time.
The first round is in the books, and half the field has been sent home.
Smart thermostats cruised past zoning in a blowout, while low-GWP refrigerants survived a much tighter matchup against CO₂ refrigeration. Cold-climate heat pumps knocked out geothermal HVAC, ductless mini-splits sent high-efficiency condensing furnaces packing, and inverter-driven compressors eliminated unitary air conditioning. (Don’t tell the folks in Texas.)
Elsewhere in the bracket, ECM motors beat refrigeration rack systems, TXVs took down building automation systems, and digital diagnostics & Bluetooth tools ended the tournament hopes of IAQ accessories.
That leaves eight HVACR innovations still standing — and now the matchups only get tougher.
Round 2 is open. Study the bracket, argue with your coworkers, question the judgment of everyone who voted differently than you, and then cast your votes for the technologies you think deserve a spot in the Final Four.
