HVAC Troubleshooting: 5 Problems and Solutions

These Issues Can Often Be Solved Quickly

HVAC troubleshooting, HVAC upgrades, service and maintenance

Like your car, even HVAC can occasionally break down. Even if your system isn’t heating or cooling correctly,  many issues can be solved without calling in a professional. Here’s a guide to some common heating and air conditioning problems and troubleshooting tips to help you correct them.

Help! My HVAC System Won’t Turn On!

We get several of these calls a week. Take a deep breath, and read below.

Solution #1: check the thermostat. Make sure it is set to the correct mode (heat or cool) and that the temperature settings are appropriate. Also check to see if the batteries need replacing!

Solution #2. examine the circuit breaker: A power surge or electrical issue can trip your HVAC system’s breaker, cutting power to the unit and sometimes everything else. Reset the circuit breaker as needed, but consult with an electrician if it keeps flipping to the “off position,” which would indicate a larger electrical issue.

Help! Airflow Is Weak!

If you notice weak airflow through your vents, your HVAC system may not be able to circulate enough air throughout your home. Weak airflow reduces indoor comfort and forces the system to work harder, costing you more in energy bills, too.

Solution #1: a dirty air filter. A blocked air filter restricts airflow, forcing your HVAC system to compensate in other ways. Check and replace your air filter regularly, ideally every 1-3 months. Remember, a clean filter improves airflow and system efficiency. It’s cheap to replace and readily available online or at any hardware store.

Solution #2: blocked ductwork. Objects or debris can block  airflow in your ducts. Ducts can also develop a leak over time. Leaky ducts will  require sealing by a professional. Be careful when you’re looking around, as ductwork is easily bent or damaged.

Help! I Have Inconsistent Temperatures!

Inconsistent temperatures from room to room are unpleasant, and point to an underlying HVAC problem.

Solution #1: reposition the thermostat. Make sure the thermostat is centrally located in your home, away from direct sunlight or doors to the outside.

Solution #2: check vents and registers. Make sure all vents and registers are open and remain clear of furniture, rugs or other household objects.

Help! The HVAC System Is Short Cycling!

Short cycling occurs when your HVAC system turns on and off frequently without completing a full heating or cooling cycle. This puts extra strain on your equipment and reduces energy efficiency.

Solution #1: check the size of your HVAC unit. If the HVAC system is too large for your home, it will heat or cool quickly and then shut off, only to restart shortly afterward. You may need to have it replaced with something that makes more sense for your home.

Solution #2: thermostat Issues. A malfunctioning thermostat can cause the system to turn on and off irregularly. Make sure the thermostat is calibrated correctly and placed in an area that represents the average temperature of your home. This means keeping the thermostat away from bright sunlight or doors to the outside.

Help! Weird Noises Are Coming from My HVAC System!

Banging, rattling, or squealing obviously indicate a problem.

Solution #1: tighten components. If you’re comfortable, check for loose parts and tighten them yourself. Otherwise, call a professional for help.

Solution #2: inspect the fan motor. An HVAC specialist may need to repair or replace the fan motor if it’s making a lot of noise.

Troubleshooting common HVAC problems as well as doing regular maintenance keeps your indoor comfort going while avoiding costly repairs down the line. Familiarize yourself with your system and know when to seek help!
