Having a healthy heater is so important during the cold winter months. Winter is difficult enough without having to worry about your heater not working efficiently or possibly dying. At Max Air Conditioning & Heating we know how important it is to keep you and your home warm, so we’ve compiled a list of easy DIY heater maintenance steps you can take to ensure your heater stays healthy all winter long.
DIY Heater Maintenance Tips
Clean Debris Off Your Unit
If you’ve been waking up dry and stuffy after having your heater on all night, it could be time to clean the debris off your unit. Cluttered air ducts can restrict the flow of heat throughout your home and cause your heater to work less efficiently, so it’s extremely important to clean your unit routinely. By keeping your unit clean, you can save yourself the headache of having less than stellar airflow and your air quality can actually improve!
To clean dust, dirt and pet hair off your unit, remove the vent covers and take a vacuum hose extension to the inside, sucking up the debris. You can also clean your covers by lightly dusting them.
Keep Your Vents Open
Although it may seem appropriate to close vents in rooms of your home you do not use, it can cause serious problems for your airflow and as a result, cause damage to your heating system. Your heating and air conditioning system is designed to serve the size of your home, so when you close one vent that reduction of airflow can mean less effective heating.
Keep all the vents open so that heat can distribute evenly throughout your house or apartment.
Change The Air Filters To Ensure Efficient Heating
Knowing when to change your air filters can be a bit confusing. As a general rule of thumb, it’s important to change your air filters every 30-60 days, but it can depend on a few different factors. It varies based on the size of your home, type of air filter you use, amount of pets in the home and the people within it. Each type of air filter will come with its own lifespan, so make sure you take note of it when installing.
If someone in your household suffers from allergies or asthma or if you have pets that shed, you will have to change your air filters more frequently.
Adjust Your Thermostat
Did you know you can save as much as 10% annually on your energy bill by making some small adjustments to your thermostat?
During the winter while you’re awake, keep your thermostat at a steady 68 degrees. At night and when you’re away from the home, set your thermostat to 7-10 degrees lower. If you have a programmable thermostat, you can easily do this and plan ahead so that your temperature returns to normal shortly before you arrive home or wake up.
