Reuben Trane, a mechanical engineer who co-founded the company now known as Trane Technologies, was posthumously named to the National Inventors Hall of Fame, located in North Canton, Ohio.
The honor was accepted by his great-great grandson Reuben Trane IV, a Trane HVAC systems development engineer, during an induction ceremony in Washington, D.C., earlier this month.
Trane was a prolific inventor who is credited with advancing the HVAC industry with products such as the convector radiator, a coil that revolutionized building heating, a Trane press release said.
“Reuben Trane was ahead of his time — a visionary whose innovations have improved the comfort, health, and productivity of millions,” said Mauro Atalla, a Trane senior vice president and its and chief technology and sustainability officer. “His induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame honors his pioneering contributions, which continue to influence who we are as a company.”
Reuben Trane, who graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1910, held more than 30 U.S. patents. He served as Trane’s president from 1916 until 1951, and as board chairman until 1953. Under his leadership, the company grew from a local plumbing and heating company to a world leader in HVAC technology.
