It’s the middle of an Austin summer, your AC has been running full blast trying to keep up with the heat, and then you notice something that seems completely out of place: ice on your air conditioner.
It might seem strange for an AC system to freeze when temperatures outside are pushing into the 90s or 100s, but it can happen. In fact, a frozen air conditioner is often a sign that something is interfering with your system’s operation.
The good news is that some causes are relatively simple to troubleshoot. Others require a professional HVAC technician to diagnose and repair. Here are a few of the most common reasons ice forms on an AC system, along with what you can do about it.
1. Check for Blocked or Restricted Airflow
One of the first things to check when you notice ice on your AC is airflow.
Your air conditioner needs a steady flow of warm air moving across the evaporator coil. If airflow becomes restricted, the coil can get too cold. Moisture collecting on the coil can then freeze, creating the ice you see on the system.
Common airflow problems include:
- A dirty or clogged air filter
- Closed or blocked supply vents
- Furniture, rugs, or other objects blocking registers
- Excessively dirty components that are restricting airflow
- Other airflow problems within the HVAC system
Start by checking your air filter. If it looks dirty, replace it with a clean filter. Then walk through your home and make sure your supply and return vents are open and unobstructed.
What Should You Do If Your AC Is Frozen?
If you see ice, turn off the AC while you address the airflow problem.
You can leave the system’s fan running to help circulate air across the frozen coil and speed up the thawing process. Depending on how much ice has accumulated, it may take several hours for the system to completely thaw.
Don’t try to chip or scrape ice away from the equipment. You could accidentally damage the coil or another component.
Once the ice has melted and you’ve corrected an obvious airflow issue, you can try turning the cooling system back on. If it begins freezing again, it’s time to have the system inspected.
2. Avoid Running Your AC When It’s Below 60°F Outside
This probably isn’t a concern during the peak of an Austin August, but it can become an issue during those Texas shoulder seasons when temperatures swing dramatically from one day to the next.
As a general rule, try to avoid running your central air conditioner when the outdoor temperature is below 60°F unless your system is specifically designed to operate under those conditions.
Lower outdoor temperatures can affect refrigerant pressures and system operation, potentially contributing to a frozen evaporator coil.
If the weather has cooled down but your house still feels warm, try using ceiling fans, opening windows when conditions allow, or switching your HVAC system to fan mode.
3. Your Thermostat Might Be Set Too Low
When Austin temperatures climb into triple digits, it’s tempting to keep lowering the thermostat in hopes of getting some relief.
Unfortunately, setting the thermostat extremely low doesn’t make your AC cool the house faster. It can simply make the system run longer.
Constant operation can put additional strain on your air conditioner and, under the right conditions, cause it to freeze. Try to avoid setting your thermostat below 67°F.
If your home can’t stay comfortable without setting the thermostat extremely low, there may be another problem affecting your system’s performance. Your AC may need maintenance, repair, or an evaluation to determine whether it’s properly sized for your home.
4. You Could Have a Refrigerant Leak
Not every frozen AC has a DIY solution.
Low refrigerant levels can cause the system pressure to drop, making the evaporator coil unusually cold and leading to ice formation. Since an air conditioner operates as a closed refrigerant system, low refrigerant often indicates a leak somewhere in the system.
A refrigerant leak requires professional diagnosis and repair.
Simply adding more refrigerant without addressing the underlying leak doesn’t solve the problem. An HVAC technician can inspect the system, identify the cause of the refrigerant loss, and recommend the appropriate repair.
5. There May Be a Mechanical Problem
If your filter is clean, your vents are open, your thermostat is set reasonably, and the AC still freezes, a mechanical issue may be responsible.
Problems with the blower motor, fan, evaporator coil, refrigerant system, or other HVAC components can interfere with proper airflow and cooling.
These problems can be difficult to diagnose without the right equipment, and continuing to run a frozen system can potentially turn a smaller repair into a larger one.
If the ice returns after the system has completely thawed, turn off the AC and schedule a professional inspection.
Can You Keep Running an AC With Ice on It?
If you notice ice on your air conditioner, don’t simply lower the thermostat and hope the system catches up. Running a frozen AC can make the problem worse and put unnecessary stress on the equipment.
Instead, follow these steps:
- Turn off the cooling.
- Leave the fan running to help thaw the ice.
- Check and replace a dirty air filter.
- Make sure vents and registers are open and unobstructed.
- Check that your thermostat isn’t set excessively low.
- Allow the system to thaw completely before restarting it.
If the system freezes again, call an HVAC professional.
