Your HVAC Isn’t Broken – It’s Infested: What Pests Are Doing to Your HVAC System

When HVAC Turns Into Wildlife Real Estate: The (Un)Official Pest Patrol

Let’s talk HVAC and all the unexpected tenants that call them home.

We’re not talking about dust bunnies or the occasional lost sock in the vent. We mean the actual interlopers: mice, squirrels, spiders and other uninvited critters that think your HVAC system is their new home.

At Bob Boldt HVAC, we’ve seen it all. All the creepy-crawlies, four-or-eight-legged pests or furry friends. Our technicians don’t just fix your AC or furnace, but they also evict any squatters they find.

A Nesting Nightmare in Eagan, MN

One of our longtime Customer Club members in Eagan, always had unexpected guests that our technicians discovered during his annual seasonal tune-ups (included free with his membership, of course!). Every time we came out, we found mouse nests. Some were old, some were fresh and some still squeaked!

While we remove the nests and take immediate action to make sure those mice don’t make a return trip, this customer jokes that we drive around town releasing trained mice just to keep his HVAC maintenance interesting.

We’d like to go on record saying we absolutely do NOT have a trained mouse army.

What Can Mice and Pests Do To Your HVAC System?

  • Electrical Wiring | Chewing through wiring can lead to short circuits, system failure, fire hazards and electrified animals.
  • Airflow Restrictions | Between nesting material, fur, feathers, bodies or spider webbing – pests living in your HVAC system can clog airflow, reduce efficiency, raise your energy bills and destroy your system.
  • Overheating & Fire Hazards | When your system is clogged it has to work harder to function. When you add in chewed wires, destroyed gas lines and foreign objects – the likelihood of a fire increases dramatically – often up to 10x higher!
  • Break Condensate Lines | These interlopers can damage the condensate lines leading to water leaks, puddles or even mold growth.
  • Compromise Safety Controls | The close proximity of pests near gas line controls, electrical wiring, relays and numerous moving parts is just a disaster waiting to happen.
  • Leaving Behind Traces | From droppings to the unlikely few who pass away while inside your system, resulting in horrible smells, attracting more pests or potential biohazard situations.
  • Destroy Insulation | Chewing through insulation inside or around your HVAC system can lead to reduced temperature control, destroyed parts and increased costs.
  • Attract More Pests | Once a system is “marked” or lived in, more pests and critters will follow. This is why we always permanently remove any “residents” reducing the chance of creatures returning.
  • System Failure | When left unchecked, having uninvited guests living in or even around your HVAC system WILL lead to complete system failure and costly repairs.
