Time to Replace or Keep Repairing Your Heater?

Winter can be so lovely, but it can also be stressful, and that’s especially true if your heating system is getting on in years. The last thing you want is a heating system breakdown, which—of course—is most likely to happen during a particularly cold snap, when you need it most, and put the most pressure on it.

Heating system repairs should be done promptly, as soon as you notice a problem. That way, you won’t have a strained system ready to give out. But what if the heater that needs repair is pretty old? Should you have that repair done, or is it time to replace your heating system? Consider these factors.

Factors which Make Repair More Worthwhile

The newer the heating system is, the more years it may still have to give. But a heating system will only reach its maximum lifespan if it has maintenance done regularly. If you’ve been diligent about annual maintenance, you can consider furnace repairs a more reasonable investment.

Efficiency and effectiveness should also be considered. Routine maintenance can offset the effects of wear and tear for many years. At some point, though, there’s nothing that can bring a heating system’s effectiveness or efficiency back to what it was when it was new. A system that still works well and doesn’t cause rising utility bills is more worth repairing.

What about repair frequency? As a heating system reaches the end of its lifetime, the likelihood of repair needs starts increasing steadily. If you haven’t noticed any increase in the frequency of heating system repair needs, it’s probably still in good enough condition to warrant a repair.

Factors which Make Replacement More Sensible

Have you been skipping annual maintenance some years? That will age your system more quickly. And what if you’ve never had routine maintenance done on your heater? That can cut its life expectancy in half! An electric furnace, which should last 20 years, might be ready to retire at ten. A gas furnace, with a usual lifespan of 15 years, might only make it seven or eight. Repairing a poorly-maintained system is not a great investment.

Take note of your heating system’s efficiency and effectiveness. If it’s had routine maintenance and repairs as required, but your home is never as evenly cozy as it used to be, or your utility bills keep creeping upward, it’s more likely to be time for heating system replacement.

Finally, once your heater needs repairs at least once each winter, you can’t expect that frequency to go down. In fact, it’s likely to go up, with your heater needing maintenance more than once each year until you do replace it. The repair it needs right now might not be very costly, but the more often repairs are needed, the more those costs add up.
